Rangers let star leave for £0, now he’s worth £4m & miles better than Cerny

Philippe Clement is a man under pressure in the Glasgow Rangers hotseat. Across 14 competitive matches this season, the Light Blues have won only eight times, hardly the form of a team fighting for trophies on all fronts.

Against Kilmarnock recently, the starting XI looked afraid to push into the opponent’s final third, with Killie registering a higher xG stat from open play than the Gers during the contest, a damning indictment of how poor the team has become under Clement of late.

During the transfer window, the Belgian knew he had to get things spot on, otherwise, it would likely be another one-horse race in the Premiership. While several signings have settled in well and shown that they might be a key part of the future, the majority have struggled.

Rangers' summer 2024 transfer business

The main priority for Clement after the 2023/24 season ended was bringing the wage bill down significantly. The likes of Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack all departed when their contracts expired, saving the club around £77k-per-week in the process.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Combine this with the fact the club also moved on Connor Goldson and Sam Lammers, who earned £55k-per-week between them, and it was evident the wage bill had been reduced effectively, freeing up funds for Clement to bring in his own players.

Establishing a player trading model appeared to be his main focus, signing Connor Barron, Clinton Nsiala, Jefte, Oscar Cortes and Hamza Igamane, who were all aged 22 or under upon arriving at Ibrox.

Jefte and Barron have featured 14 and 11 times respectively for the first team this season, while the jury is still out on Cortes and Igamane. Time will be given to those who don’t have much experience, but can the same be said for those who have arrived with plenty to prove?

Robin Propper was expected to be the heir apparent to Goldson, but he hasn’t exactly hit the ground running so far. Nedim Bajrami has shown plenty of promise, although he has been forced to play on the left wing rather than through the middle due to injury issues.

Vaclav Cerny was a signing who, on the surface, looked like having all the hallmarks of being an excellent one. A winger who is entering his prime years and scored four times in the Bundesliga last season.

The reality, however, has been very different.

Vaclav Cerny’s season in numbers

Registering three goals and two assists in 13 games since joining the Ibrox side hints at a positive start, but more often than not, the Czech gem has played poorly.

His struggles have been apparent in Europe especially. In the first two Europa League fixtures, Cerny has missed two big chances, succeeded with just 0.5 dribbles per game and created zero big chances. These are the matches where Clement expects big things from the former Ajax gem.

His two-goal salvo against St Johnstone before the international break skews things slightly with regard to his domestic statistics, but it is clear the winger needs to improve massively.

Over the previous few years, the Gers have struggled to find effective widemen capable of contributing goals and assists, while also creating plenty of chances.

They released someone in 2012 who is now starring across the pond and would make a big difference to the current first team – Lewis Morgan.

The Rangers star who left for nothing

The current New York Red Bulls star joined the Rangers academy back in 2004 when he was aged just eight, going on to spend the next eight years at Auchenhowie before being released in 2012.

Not to be deterred by his release from the Ibrox side, Morgan soon joined St Mirren and went on to make 118 appearances for the Buddies over the next six years, scoring 29 goals while registering 23 assists for the club.

It didn’t take long for his form to get noticed, as Celtic lured him back to Glasgow in 2018, but his spell at Parkhead was hardly wonderful, scoring only twice in 31 games for the club.

A move to the MLS in 2020 has proven to be the catalyst for him to kickstart his career, first shining for Inter Miami before joining New York Red Bulls in 2021.

Lewis Morgan’s season statistics

Hailed as “dynamic” by his former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, the Scot has exuded this quality for his club side during the 2024 MLS campaign.

Across 31 matches in all competitions, Morgan has registered 20 goal contributions – 13 goals and seven assists – while also creating 13 big chances, averaging 1.7 key passes per game and succeeding with one dribble each match.

Compare this to Cerny, who has scored only eight goals since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, chipping in with just three assists, suggesting Morgan would have been a far more effective threat out wide than the Czech winger.

When compared to his positional peers, Morgan ranks in the top 5% for shot-creating actions, progressive carries and progressive passes over the previous 365 days. Cerny, in comparison, doesn’t even rank in the top 50% for these metrics when compared to players in similar leagues over the same timeframe.

This is yet more evidence of how much better Morgan is at the moment over the current Rangers loanee.

Still ‘only’ 28, Morgan’s market value could continue to rise following his excellent showings this season. Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, the forward is currently valued at €5m (£4m).

Of course, the Light Blues didn’t know back in 2012 how good a player Morgan was going to be, releasing him due to his physical stature. After years of developing in Scotland, he took the plunge and moved to America.

Lewis Morgan

This has not only revitalised his career, but also seen the player establish himself as a more permanent fixture in the Scottish national team setup, playing five times under Steve Clarke.

If Clement was able to call on him rather than Cerny, then perhaps the Gers might have scored a few more goals. For that there is no doubt.

Rangers had a starlet who was like "Wayne Rooney", then he left for £0

Rangers thought they had a Wayne Rooney-like talent on their hands, then he was released.

How Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed ‘greatest development’ Man Utd legend has ever seen – with Portuguese superstar becoming ‘best player in the world’

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has explained how the “greatest development” allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to become the “best in the world”.

Prolific frontman Van Nistelrooy was already at Old Trafford when the Red Devils snapped up the potential of teenage Ronaldo in 2003. The Dutch striker did not make life easy for his Portuguese colleague, with it revealed that training ground arguments left CR7 in tears.

Ronaldo was, however, prepared to work hard on maximising his talent – with that relentless pursuit of perfection still serving him well at 40 years of age. The all-time great remains a talismanic presence for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr and his country.

WHAT RUUD VAN NISTELROOY SAID

Van Nistelrooy is not surprised by Ronaldo’s success and longevity, with the former United star – who is now in charge of Leicester – saying of the hottest prospects that he has witnessed: “There are so many – but seeing a young Cristiano Ronaldo come into the Manchester United dressing room and develop, within three years, into the best player in the world, was the greatest development I've ever seen.

“So if you see how he works, how he lives his life to be the best he can be – that's the elite standard. He came into our dressing room with those standards, and he's said in interviews, I came into that dressing room and I had to live up to those standards every day.

“He was open to learn and improve, and he worked and worked and worked every day, on the pitch, in the gym, in the recovery sessions, in his food, in his treatment. When you have seen those standards at the highest level, and you experience what that is – there are not many players who know that – so I was lucky.

“I feel privileged that I can share that knowledge, and they became my standards. So when I see Cristiano or a 19-year-old Xavi Simons come from Paris (Saint-Germain) on a free – he believed in the pathway at PSV with me as the manager, with the training model we have to improve young players. He bought into it and the rest is history. It's standards and talent combined.”

Rahul and Kishan score rapid fifties as India ace steep chase against England

Liam Livingstone impressed with bat and ball for England before going off the field with a finger injury

Fifties from KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan at the top of the order led India to a seven-wicket win in their first warm-up game against England. Apart from setting the base for a successful chase of 189, the 82-run opening partnership between Rahul and Kishan, off just 50 balls, also left India with an interesting choice ahead of their opening match of the tournament proper.Related

Virat Kohli: 'I will be batting at three'

Before the match, Virat Kohli indicated that Rahul would open with Rohit Sharma – who was rested for this game – when the tournament begins, and that he himself would bat at No. 3. Rahul showed why his captain wants him at the top of the order, providing the early impetus with 51 off just 24 balls, carrying on the scintillating form he showed in his last match of the IPL season for Punjab Kings. With a 46-ball 70, Kishan ensured he made a strong case for selection too, in the middle order if not at the top.India won with an over to spare, but the match was tighter than that margin suggested, with Chris Jordan sending down a wide, high full-toss that was no-balled and ran away past the keeper to the boundary, to change the equation from 16 required off nine balls to 11 off eight. Hardik Pandya swung at the free-hit that followed and sent an edge to the third-man boundary, before Rishabh Pant finished off at the end of that over with a pulled six. Pant remained unbeaten on a 14-ball 29 that also included successive straight sixes off Moeen Ali.Liam Livingstone left the field with a finger injury•ICC/Getty Images

There were positives for England too, particularly with the bat, with Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Moeen making strong contributions in the middle order. Livingstone also picked up the wicket of a subdued Kohli with his legspin – he also showed his versatility by bowling offspin to the left-handers – but a good evening for him ended early when he walked off the field with a finger injury sustained while going for a catch in the deep in the 16th over. England will hope the injury isn’t serious.Mohammed Shami took three wickets for India, but their most impressive performers with the ball were Jasprit Bumrah, who took Bairstow out with a perfectly directed yorker and only conceded 26 in his four overs. R Ashwin was even more frugal, going at less than a run a ball, and made a case for selection in India’s spin attack. The legspinner Rahul Chahar, however, was expensive, as were Shami and particularly Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who conceded 54 in his four overs including Moeen hitting him for 4, 6, 6 off the last three balls of England’s innings. Both teams will play their final warm-up games on Wednesday – England against New Zealand and India against Australia – and get a chance to test some of the players they rested today. These include Rohit and the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy from the Indian camp, and Eoin Morgan – Jos Buttler stood in as captain – and the fast bowlers Tom Curran and Tymal Mills from England.

Man Utd can axe Ten Hag for Mourinho 2.0 who Fergie’s recommended

Manchester United have had a disastrous start to the 2024/25 campaign. The Red Devils have been disappointing so far this term, and have won just two Premier League games, with one draw and three losses, meaning they sit in 13th place on seven points after six games.

Their victories so far have come against Fulham on the opening day, a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, and a 3-0 away win against struggling Southampton. They also beat Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao Cup at home.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

The poor start to the new season has resulted in Erik ten Hag’s future coming under question. Given the underlying numbers, it is perhaps no surprise United are considering a change.

United’s stats from the 2024/25 season

Ten Hag kept his job last campaign after an FA Cup victory against Manchester City convinced new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his recently-appointed INEOS regime that he was the right man for the job.

Since then, the Dutchman has experienced some devastating results. A late defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex, and 3-0 losses to both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford have not helped his case. The Red Devils dropped points in their first Europa League game, drawing 1-1 at home to FC Twente, and put in a generally poor performance, which has been cause for concern.

It is fair to say that United’s numbers are not exactly a compliment to the manager. Whilst some things are simply not his fault, like the side missing 2.8 big chances per game, according to Sofascore, there are stats which suggest he is not getting the best out of his squad.

Whilst the 13-time Premier League champions have created 10.81xG, as per Understat, they are massively underachieving on their expected goals total, having found the back of the net just five times. They are struggling at home, too, having earned just three points and scored one goal, the joint lowest alongside Southampton.

Ratcliffe may well decide that, soon enough, it is time for him to pull the plug on a disastrous start to the campaign, sack Ten Hag and look to salvage the season. In terms of the Dutchman’s replacement, one potential option is Massimiliano Allegri.

Would Allegri be a good replacement?

As he did when he retired in 2013 with David Moyes, Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to have recommended former Juventus boss Allegri to Ratcliffe as a replacement for Ten Hag. That is according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim the legendary manager views the Italian as his ‘preferred choice’.

Allegri’s most recent role was at Juventus, his second spell at the Turin giants, having previously managed them between 2014 and 2019. He left the Allianz Stadium for the second time at the end of last season, after guiding them to victory in the Coppa Italia final.

Described as a “defence first” coach by football analyst Ben Mattinson, the Italian prefers to set up his side in five at the back formation, with wing-backs, or a back three with wide midfielders, depending on which way it is interpreted.

Systems like this are not all just defensive systems, something that is a common footballing myth; that has been dispelled by Simone Inzgahi’s Inter side and Thomas Tuchel’s Champions League-winning Chelsea side.

However, Allegri does tend to set up his side in a defensive way, looking to not concede goals as a primary objective, rather than score goals. As per Sofascore, his Juve side scored 54 goals and conceded just 31 in Serie A last term, keeping 17 clean sheets in total.

This is certainly a set-up from which United could benefit. Last term, they conceded 58 goals and an average of 1.5 per game. They also conceded a whooping 550 shots, as per Statmuse.

This more defensive approach from the Italian has led to comparisons to former United boss Jose Mourinho. The legendary Portuguese manager is also renowned for his pragmatic football and is famed for his Chelsea side winning the Premier League in 2004/05, conceding just 15 goals all season.

It was certainly a comparison that the manager appreciated back in March 2023. When discussing the fact the two have been compared, Allegri said “if I associate myself with him, I’m very happy”.

Whether or not this approach is what United needs at the moment remains to be seen. However, given the fast-paced, counter-attacking football the Red Devils faithful became accustomed to during Ferguson’s reign, it may not go down too well with the crowd.

Jose Mourinho

With that being said, the judgement of their legendary manager may well be considered by Ratcliffe, as he looks to find the perfect man to lead the Red Devils.

It may not have worked out too well for Mourinho at United – as he lasted just over two years – yet the current Fenerbahce boss did still claim two major trophies, with the hope that Allegri could achieve similar results in the Old Trafford dugout.

Man Utd can appoint Ten Hag upgrade who has a "better win rate than Slot"

He would be well-received by the fans

Robin Uthappa: 'Was wondering how to help as I was doubting myself'

Batter says he had previously felt more secure only under Gambhir’s leadership at Kolkata Knight Riders

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Oct-20214:28

Gambhir: ‘Credit to Dhoni for persisting with Uthappa’

Batter Robin Uthappa said Chennai Super Kings’ culture of “making sure all players within the group felt secure” helped him retain his belief after not playing for the majority of the 2021 IPL season. Uthappa contributed with 63 off 44 balls in the first qualifier against Delhi Capitals on Sunday to set a strong foundation for Super Kings’ chase of 173.”The culture in the group is that everyone will get an opportunity,” Uthappa told Star Sports Tamil after the game. “I started the first game well, but didn’t kick on from there. After that I got out playing shots that I’d have backed myself to play positively. I knew I had to be positive and express myself.”I was sitting out for 10 matches and was wondering how to help. It was eating away at me and I had self-doubts. I was trying to help by doing whatever I can, like bringing them water, but to get an opportunity to actually go out to the middle and add value, it’s something I’m grateful for.”Watch the IPL on ESPN+

Apart from Super Kings, Uthappa said he had previously felt more secure in an IPL team only under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership at Kolkata Knight Riders.”At KKR I had a similar experience under Gautam,” he said. “He’d make sure all players within the group felt secure. So the players always felt like giving back to the franchise. After that, this is the first time I’m experiencing that kind of security. You’re thinking of helping and giving back to the team.”After losing Faf du Plessis in the first over, Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who passed 600 runs this season on Sunday, put on a 110-run partnership for the second wicket in just 77 balls. Uthappa also celebrated his fifty with a unique sign, a gesture that indicated “the love within the group”.Robin Uthappa on his celebration: “The three finger sign is the love within the group”•BCCI”We just wanted to rotate the strike and build the partnership,” Uthappa said. “First six overs, we didn’t want to lose a wicket. Seventh onwards we decided it didn’t matter even if we were getting only 6-7 an over, let’s take the game deep.”I’ve always had the energy, despite my size. I run well between the wickets. We’d always decided that one side in this ground is bigger than the other, so we targeted the boundaries against the spinners accordingly. When we’re batting to the bigger side, we targeted the boundaries straight. We just didn’t want to lose wickets.”Uthappa also said that though “many had written Dhoni off”, he is the best at what he does. “It’s very heartening to see from the outside,” he said. “Many had written him off, but when the situation arises, he met the challenge. He’s the best at this. All of us in the dressing room wanted him to go out and do it.”Mahi had said we have the best fans, and I agree. When I joined, I said I don’t know how to whistle, but will make you all whistle. Hopefully we can do that after winning the final.”

'If there was a clique, we don't have any evidence of it' – CSA's Eddie Khoza on 'big five' allegations

Cricket South Africa has not been able to find “any evidence” that a clique of players influenced selection in the past, and stands by the robustness of its current selection policy, which came into effect in 2014. That was the testimony of Eddie Khoza, CSA’s acting head of cricket pathways, who appeared at the Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings on Thursday and responded on a variety of issues including controversies in team selection.Asked specifically about Roger Telemachus’ assertion that a group of senior white players known as the “big five” had a big hand in selection at the 2007 World Cup, Khoza, who was not working for CSA at that time, said it was difficult to corroborate some of Telemachus’ allegations.”I do respect Mr Telemachus, he is one of the players who played for the Proteas. But the issue of a clique that controlled selection may not be entirely true, because of the policies we have in place,” Khoza said. “From where I am sitting, we tried to verify the statements that he made. We couldn’t go to Goolam (Rajah, the former team manager who died of Covid-19 earlier this year). We cannot verify some of the assertions. I have to have the confidence that the policy was followed in terms of what needed to be done. If there was a clique, we don’t have any evidence of it.”Khoza conceded the ombudsman’s assistant Sandile July’s point that if there was a “big five”, the players in that clique would not have labelled themselves as such, and that because there was no formal complaint laid at the time does not mean that the experience of players of the likes of Telemachus is invalid. But, he said, things are different now. “Things have changed. We have certain mechanisms we have put in place to detect certain issues,” Khoza said. “Our relationship with SACA (the South African Cricketers’ Association) is also at a different level. If any player cannot even speak to the union themselves to say I have this issue with CSA, I will hear from SACA.”At the time of Roger Telemachus, you have to accept that certain things might not have been in place to bring some of these concerns to the fore. It’s very unfortunate. I want to make sure everybody that comes through cricket has a positive experience. It was saddening to me listening to some of these former players, who I regard as my heroes, to hear that they went through some of these issues.”CSA’s lawyer, Aslam Moosajee, who led Khoza through his testimony, acknowledged that “Roger Telemachus may have suffered from the fact that prior to 2014, there were no clear guidelines on who was ultimately responsible for selection”.Related

  • Why Zondi turned down de Villiers when he wanted to return

The 2014 policy, which excludes the captain from having a vote in selection, came into place after Hussein Manack, a former selector who also appeared at the SJN, proposed that CSA formalise the process. Manack’s testimony focused largely on the non-selection of Khaya Zondo for an ODI in India back when AB de Villiers was captain – de Villiers was adamant that an out-of-form David Miller play ahead of Zondo. Khoza said not picking Zondo at the time was a “missed opportunity, especially with the challenges we are faced with trying to encourage black African batters to come to the fore. At the time, Zondo was performing. If we would have taken the opportunity then, how many aspirations of young cricketers would we have reached out to?”He clarified that a formal complaint was lodged in the Zondo instance and that CSA put in place a subcommittee to investigate. “They felt it was unfair but not on the basis of race,” Khoza said. “But we still missed an opportunity.”Khoza maintained that selection is a complex and subjective process, and that CSA is continually refining its process. “Selecting is a very contentious issue. It doesn’t matter which sport. When it comes to cricket, there’s different views because you are not only playing here at home but you are also playing away and the strength of the type of combinations you might find might differ,” he said. “It’s an issue that’s why we normally leave it to independent people to facilitate for us. We need to make sure they are assertive enough and the bridge between them and the players is brought closer so that there is a better understanding.”The hearings are expected to conclude tomorrow, with the end of CSA’s submission and a guest appearance by Michael Holding. Among those whose responses have not been heard are director of cricket Graeme Smith and former captain AB de Villiers. Both have submitted written affidavits, which have not yet been made public.

Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of Bangladesh’s remaining matches in the T20 World Cup because of a hamstring injury. Rangers’ Philippe Clement watched 18 y/o starlet score two goals this week

Rangers boss Philippe Clement is fighting for his job. The Gers had yet another day to forget on Sunday, losing 1-0 away to Kilmarnock and yet more ground in the Scottish Premiership title race. The defeat means Clement’s side are now stuck six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in third place after eight games played.

Not only are they struggling in the league, Rangers are also having a tough time in Europe. After failing to make it through Champions League qualifying, they were recently thumped 4-1 by French side Lyon in the Europa League.

As a result of their indifferent start to the campaign, fans are becoming impatient and pressure is mounting on Clement, who took over as boss in 2023. According to a recent report from Football Insider, preparations are being made for Clement’s dismissal with “sources close to the Rangers hierarchy” believing that “results this season have not met the board’s expectations”.

“There is now a growing feeling at Ibrox that Clement’s position is no longer secure,” Football Insider’s report claims.

Clement could now turn to youngsters to save himself

One of Rangers’ biggest problems this term has been finding the net away from home. At Ibrox, they’ve been clinical, scoring 11 in just four top flight games, but on the road, they’ve managed just one in four.

Cyriel Dessers is without a goal in five games and struggling for form, while Brazilian striker Danilo only made his return from injury earlier this week when he stepped out for Rangers B against Stenhousemuir in the Scottish Challenge Cup. According to Rangers News, Clement and the rest of his coaching staff were on hand to watch the game, which ended 4-1 to the Light Blues.

Glasgow Rangers striker Danilo.

While Danilo was on the scoresheet, the Belgian manager was likely to have been more impressed with the display of teenage winger Findlay Curtis, who scored twice on the night. The 18-year-old opened the scoring after just 13 minutes and grabbed his second on the hour, curling a confident finish into the bottom corner.

While there’s no indication yet that Clement will call up Curtis to the first-team as a result of his impressive display, it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise given his current squad’s recent struggles.

Who is Findlay Curtis?

Curtis began his journey with Rangers when he was just six years old and has since progressed through the ranks to become a regular for the club’s B team, for whom he’s now scored three times this season. Having already trained with the first-team, the youngster is hoping he can make his debut sooner rather than later.

“I’ve trained with the first-team twice so far and they were a great experience. One was match prep but the other was a full session and I loved it,” Curtis said in a recent interview shared on Rangers’ official website.

“I love every single minute of it here and next season I will push as much as I can, do the right things on and off the pitch and focus on developing my game. You have to push for a chance in the first-team and to make my debut one day would be unbelievable.”
