'You have to have that buy in' – How MLS expansion side San Diego FC is cultivating next generation of multicultural soccer fans in community with complex sports history

The 30th MLS club is trying to break into a strong soccer community, one that has a complicated history with pro franchises

Oliver Rodriguez still remembers his first drum beat. He can mimic it over video chat, playing an imaginary bass drum with his left hand, and a cymbal with his right, a pitter-patter of classic barra rhythm ubiquitous at South American and Mexican soccer games.

He first played it at seven years old, when he attended a Liga MX game with his father. At halftime, he was introduced to one of the drummers, taught the simple groove, and allowed to practice for the entire second half. Rodriguez, now 18 and living in San Diego, still plays some variation of it to this day.

The Southern California native – and proud San Diegan – is one of the hundreds of thousands of fans San Diego FC is trying to reach ahead of its inaugural season in Major League Soccer. This is a unique sporting culture, a place infatuated with its soccer but – truth be told – slightly resentful of the professional franchises in other major sports that have been stripped from its grasp over the years.

The challenge for the club, then, is to tie it all together, and in the midst of a chaotic political climate, unite fans around an entirely new product.

“It's been very, very carefully thought out,” Jerry Jimenez, supporter relations manager at San Diego FC, told GOAL. “Understanding that supporters need to grow into what their own culture is going to be. They need to figure it out on their own. And we're here just to facilitate that and be a conduit to what they want to create for the community.”

IMAGNMany years of hurt

The history of soccer in San Diego is a complex one. This is a diverse city. The Mexican border is just 17 miles south of downtown. For many of the long-time residents – Latinos, Mexico natives or Mexican-Americans who have since settled in the area – Liga MX soccer reigns supreme.

There are supporters of the big teams – Club America, Pumas, Cruz Azul. But there is also a strong passion felt for Club Tijuana, known colloquially as .

And then, there are the American teams who have come and gone. First, there was 1904 San Diego, a club founded by Eden Hazard and Demba Ba. But that folded within five years. Then, there was the San Diego Loyal. They had a better run, competing in the USL for four years. That side, too, fell apart, and haven’t been active since 2024.

Ironically, it is the club whose arrival was the death knell of the Loyal’s tenure in San Diego that is now lobbying for local support. San Diego FC knows this.

"You have to have that buy in, you have to have that representation. But the club has to be honest about that,” Jimenez said.

This is only further complicated by the fact that San Diego has always existed in a strange place in the American sporting landscape. It is the country’s eighth-largest city, by population, but until Feb. 22, has just one remaining professional franchise – the San Diego Padres.

The NFL’s Chargers used to play there – and had a strong following – but they relocated up I-5 to Los Angeles in 2017. Before that, there were the NBA’s San Diego Clippers, but they, too, were snatched by the city two hours to the north in 1984.

“San Diego has always been a city where we just, for some reason – I don't know why it is – we keep losing people, but everybody keeps telling us we're amazing. But, we lost the Chargers, we lost basketball teams. The Padres, that's the only major league team we have left,” sadi Miguel Barajas, a leader of Chavos Frontera Ultras, the first Supporters’ Group to declare allegiance for the club.

AdvertisementThe San Diego Union-TributePleasing the locals

Barajas represents another group that San Diego has focused on. His story is rooted in a clash of identity. Raised in San Diego by a Mexico City-born father, Barajas was introduced to soccer through his family’s allegiance to Chivas Guadalajara.

He fell in love with the game through that team, which enjoyed immense success throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. But a complementary understanding of soccer culture was cultivated elsewhere. Barajas served in the Air Force – there is a large military air base in San Diego – and when stationed in Germany was exposed to the European attitude towards the game.

It all meant that when professional soccer first arrived in San Diego, he simply had to stay in touch. Barajas was still playing at a good level – he still plays indoor once per week – when the Loyal arrived in town. He threw his support behind the USL team, and was a regular at their games.

San Diego FC, when announced as an MLS expansion franchise in 2023, was something of a conflict. His group, Chavos, decided that they would split into two chapters. One would remain, well, loyal, to the Loyal. Another would become SDFC fans. Given that it was unlikely that the two teams would ever meet – outside of the U.S. Open Cup – it was a comfortable situation.

But when the Loyal folded, Barajas had only one option.

“It was just one of those bittersweet situations,” he said. “We had the Loyal that we really loved, but they can’t promote or relegate. They were just stuck in the middle, and then we had this other club that was coming in that’s going to be a major league club. So we just had to make that transition.”

Getty ImagesReaching out to the community

At first, Barajas was skeptical. But then, soon-to-be San Diego FC CEO Tom Penn came to town. He had built LAFC from the ground up, and developed a real passion around the team in a town that was full of LA Galaxy loyalists.

Penn’s remit was simple: get people to like, if not love, this team. Barajas was hooked from relatively early on. It started with information sessions and presentations in communities (there were, he admits, a few beers involved at local breweries). But the real appeal for Barajas was the promise that this team would represent his people.

Part of allure was San Diego’s association with the Right to Dream Academy. Started in 1999, the system was originally applied as a means of finding, developing and offering opportunities to young players in Ghana. It has since expanded, with a strong association with Danish side FC Nordsjaelland. San Diego is its next frontier. And for Barajas, who had become disillusioned by the pay-to-play model that dominates American youth soccer, the promise that the sport could be cheap and accessible was vital.

“They have been making efforts to have free programs for kids around the county,” Barajas said of San Diego FC. “They've been putting out pitches and little soccer fields. They bring up all kinds of tournaments. It's been really good, and refreshing to see.”

IMAGNMaking the right hires

Jimenez moved to San Diego when he was 11. For 17 years, he was a plumber who happened to like soccer. He didn’t really have a connection to a club for most of his life. He flirted with Chivas USA before they folded, and was heavily involved in the 3252 of LAFC – driving two hours north on the weekends to support the club. But even then, there wasn’t massive affiliation with a badge, he said.

And then, the Loyal came to town. Jimenez had something of his own to connect to. He became heavily involved in Supporter’s culture around the USL club, and when the San Diego Wave of the NWSL started up in 2021, Jimenez was brought on board to serve as a bridge between the club and the community.

It only made sense, then, that he would join San Diego FC. He was employee No. 6, brought on when the club didn’t really exist.

“To bring in a supporter liaison that early on into the club's history, that tells you right away, that the club understands supporter culture is important,” Jimenez said. “And I think our ownership and our board knows that, and so it was very easy in the beginning to have that sense of belonging.”

They did similar things elsewhere. San Diego has made an effort to hire from the local area – bringing in people to fill numerous roles from the existing soccer community. Jimenez lives just around the corner from Barajas. Friends have been hired. This has been set up as a community club – through and through.

Tavernier 2.0: Rangers pursuing move for "unbelievable" star

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement will know that he has a huge job on his hands to turn the club’s fortunes around on the pitch.

The Ibrox giants are already nine points adrift of the top two teams in the Scottish Premiership, after losing three of their league games already this season.

Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen could use the upcoming January transfer window to bolster the squad and take further steps towards building a team that suits the manager.

One player who is reportedly on the chopping block is club captain James Tavernier. Football Insider recently reported that the Gers are planning to cash in on him at the end of the season.

The outlet claimed that his underwhelming performances on the pitch have led the board to the feeling that now is the right time to move the skipper on, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2026.

Football Insider added that the Gers are also working on signing a replacement for the Englishman and that a new addition could come in during the January window, five months before they plan to sell Tavernier.

Rangers eyeing English full-back

According to The Boot Room, Rangers are interested in Wrexham full-back Ryan Barnett ahead of the January transfer window, which is less than two months away.

The report claims that Clement is in pursuit of a deal to bring the 25-year-old star to Ibrox to bolster his options across the backline for the second half of the season and beyond.

It does not reveal, however, how much the English League One side would want for the player, who is contracted to the club through to the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

RangersNews also claims that the Ibrox giants have been keeping tabs on his performances in League One for the celebrity-owned team, whilst it adds that Wrexham supporters have been comparing him to Brazilian legend Cafu because of his attack-minded displays down the right flank.

Meanwhile, they could face some competition for his services. The Telegraph recently reported that both Stoke City and Preston North End are eyeing up a possible swoop for the English whiz, which suggests that Rangers will have to convince him to turn down a move to the Championship in favour of a switch to Scotland.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Clement and Koppen must now push to secure a deal for Barnett ahead of the likes of Preston and Stoke, because he could come in as a dream replacement for James Tavernier.

James Tavernier's form for Rangers this season

The English veteran has been criticised by supporters at times this season, with The BBC publishing reactions from fans to Clement’s recent decision to drop him against Olympiacos.

Among the replies, some fans highlighted his ‘suspect’ and ‘weak’ defensive work, with one supporter describing Tavernier as a ‘shadow of himself’ this term.

The 33-year-old, who was told he “needs to look” at the defensive side of his game by Steven Whittaker last year, was found wanting in the only Old Firm clash of the season so far, failing to deal with a ball across the box that his man – Daizen Maeda – scored from in a 3-0 win for Celtic.

Tavernier’s play in possession of the ball has not been efficient or effective enough to make up for his defensive frailties, unfortunately, as he has often been wasteful for Rangers in the Premiership.

Last season, the Englishman scored 17 goals and created 19 ‘big chances’ in 38 league appearances, which shows that he had a huge impact at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Tavernier is yet to find the back of the net in the current league campaign and has lost possession a staggering 220 times, to provide three assists.

These statistics, along with his poor dribble success rate, show that the 33-year-old dud is giving the ball away far too much, without making much of an impact at the top end of the pitch to make it worthwhile.

This is why it could be the right time for the board to make the decision to cash in on the captain, whether that is in January or next summer, and Barnett could come in as Tavernier 2.0 for the Gers.

Why Ryan Barnett could be James Tavernier 2.0

The Wrexham star is not a goalscoring threat from right-back, like the Rangers captain, but other players could step up to take care of the skipper’s penalty duties.

He has only scored one goal in the league this season, the winner against Mansfield, and teammate Max Cleworth said: “Barney has been unbelievable this year. We know he has that finishing in him, we saw it last year, especially the second goal he scored against Forest Green here, so we know he can do it.”

What Barnett can provide from that position on a regular basis, however, is outstanding creativity, based on his sublime form in League One for his club in the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old ace has provided a huge amount of creativity from right-back for Wrexham, with 29 chances created and five assists in just 13 games.

He lost possession 17.5 times per game on average, compared to Tavernier’s 20 times per match, and recorded more goals and more assists than the Rangers captain, suggesting that the Light Blues target could be more effective and efficient.

This suggests that the potential is there for Barnett to offer more in the final third than the Gers hero is currently offering, which is why he could be an excellent addition to the squad.

The Wrexham star has also only been dribbled past 0.2 times per game, compared to Tavernier’s 0.5 in the Premiership, and could offer more solidity defensively than the ex-Newcastle man.

It is now down to Clement and Koppen to get a deal over the line for the English star, as he could come in as a fantastic replacement for the captain.

Almiron upgrade: Newcastle may have already sold their own Semenyo

Newcastle United fans have, at this stage, accepted that the 2024 summer transfer window was one of survival, and survive the Magpies did.

Though top targets were not signed, the club’s most talented players, coveted though they were, were kept at St. James’ Park. Frustratingly, though, a right winger was not signed, something that still rankles even if fans have put the struggles behind them.

Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy jockey for purchase on the flank, but neither bear the kind of quality that aligns with Eddie Howe’s lofty visions.

Efforts were made to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in August, though the Tricky Trees shut down United’s £50m proposal on deadline day. Now, Howe’s attention has turned elsewhere.

Newcastle eyeing new right winger

According to a recent update from Football Insider, Bournemouth are hoping to collect around £50m for the sale of Antoine Semenyo in 2025, with Newcastle joined by Tottenham Hotspur in their interest.

Semenyo swept up Bournemouth’s Player and Goal of the Month awards earlier this week as he continues his red-hot start to the season, only furthering the argument that his skillset is tailor-made for a starring role under Howe’s wing.

Whether the Cherries are able to maintain such demands remains to be seen, but the “very intelligent player”, as described by analyst Ben Mattinson, has been brilliant under Andoni Iraola, posting three goals and an assist across eight Premier League appearances in 2024/25.

Football Insider hold the belief that £50m might be a stretch too steep for suitors like the Magpies, and they must be rueing a sale for a player who already carries many of the 24-year-old’s properties in the up-and-coming Yankuba Minteh.

Howe has already sold his own Semenyo

The shadow of financial repercussions loomed over Tyneside this summer, and cashing in on the 20-year-old Minteh – whom talent scout Jacek Kulig has dubbed a “jewel” – was recognised as a sure-fire way to escape from danger.

Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord

Brighton & Hove Albion won the race, signing the electric-paced winger in a deal worth £30m, with Newcastle turning quite the profit for a player who had never kicked a ball in black and white.

Signed from Danish side Odense Boldklub in July 2023 for about £6m, Minteh was loaned out to Arne Slot’s Feyenoord last term and caught the eye, notching 16 goal contributions across 26 matches.

Given that analyst and BBC contributor Raj Chohan has praised Minteh’s “Vinicius quality” ball skills, it’s clear that Newcastle might have made a fatal error, particularly as FBref deem him to be a similar player to Semenyo, among those in Europe’s top five leagues.

The £40k-per-week star’s defensive prowess and pacy quality, allowing him to lance through opposing defensive lines, mirrors that of Semenyo, and when comparing the players’ metrics across the past year, you can see that the wingers are indeed strikingly similar.

One thing’s for certain: either player would mark an upgrade on Almiron, who has been linked with a move away from Newcastle for most of the year and, aged 30, has fallen by the wayside.

Four substitute appearances in the Premier League this season speak of his diminished role, and though the industrious Murphy offers balance and energy, there are myriad upgrades that could be welcomed to the city – one of them being Minteh.

Surely there was another way to circumvent PSR problems, one that didn’t require the sale of the club’s biggest talent, hailed for his “special” qualities by one Danish scout.

Maybe Newcastle will succeed in their venture to sign Semenyo, but they might have let go of their own version, one who could far outstrip the Bournemouth winger, in Minteh, now residing on the South Coast.

Former scout says Eddie Howe is tempted to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd

Erik ten Hag’s time as Manchester United manager could soon be up despite the win over Brentford, according to a recent report. It hasn’t been the start the Red Devils were hoping for in this 2024/25 campaign, with poor results putting significant pressure on the Dutchman, and now one of INEOS’ targets is apparently eyeing the job.

Man Utd manager latest

Three wins from eight Premier League games have put pressure on Ten Hag, so much so that in the last international break there was talk about his time at Old Trafford coming to an end. INEOS decided to stick with the Dutchman, but that hasn’t stopped managers from being linked as possible replacements.

Almost every coach on the planet has been mentioned as a possible target by this point, but there are still a few new names cropping up. VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness is one of the new names to be linked to Old Trafford, with the 42-year-old impressing enormously in the Bundesliga – they went to Turin and beat Juventus 1-0 in the Champions League this week.

As well as Hoeness, another manager to emerge as a contender is Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim, as it has been reported that United have made enquiries about him and his situation in Portugal. But the talk of managers replacing Ten Hag doesn’t stop there, as a manager who has been mentioned as a possible target in the past could now be open to the idea of joining the Red Devils.

Eddie Howe tempted to replace Ten Hag at Man Utd

According to former Premier League scout Mick Brown when speaking to Football Insider, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is now tempted by the idea of replacing Ten Hag at Manchester United. Brown used to be a chief scout at Old Trafford and remains well-connected to the club, and he believes the Magpies manager would back himself to take over at Old Trafford.

Howe, who has been described as being “brilliant” by Gary Neville, has been in charge of Newcastle since November 2021 and has already guided the club to a Carabao Cup final and Champions League football. The 46-year-old has been linked with replacing Ten Hag earlier this month, with INEOS reportedly placing Howe on a four-man shortlist, as he is well regarded at United, especially with Dan Ashworth at Old Trafford now.

Browen believes Howe could now be tempted into becoming Man United manager should Ten Hag leave the club. He said: “I’ve heard he’d be tempted by the opportunity. No matter the situation the club finds itself in, anybody would be tempted by that offer. There are major problems which need overhauling, but it’s a great place to be, and it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“Howe, I believe, would back himself to sort out some of those problems, and that would get the crowd on his side. He’s got a very good reputation. I’ve never worked with him personally, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about him and his management.

“I don’t think there are that many candidates in the frame for the job now. If Ten Hag was sacked tomorrow, where would they go next? That’s why the owners haven’t pulled the trigger, and that’s why Howe’s name is on their list. They obviously feel that if they pull the trigger, he would consider taking over.”

'Immensely proud' Dean Elgar lauds South Africa's character in 'tough conditions'

South Africa captain Dean Elgar has heaped praise on his side for their dogged fightback in the Wanderers Tests against India, as they levelled the series 1-1 with a seven-wicket win in the second match in “tough” conditions. He singled out his bowling attack for skittling out the opposition’s 10 wickets in each innings, limiting India to just 202 and 266.”I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way of winning a game of cricket. But I think the one thing that doesn’t go away is basic fundamentals of playing the game, basics of bowling, basics of batting,” Elgar told the host broadcaster in the post-match interview. “It’s something I think we lacked in the previous game, and I think we ticked those boxes pretty well towards the end of today.”The message I sent out to the guys I, ‘Let’s focus on the second game. Let’s get a win. Let’s go one-all, and we go to Cape Town, where we’ve got a very good record as well. Saying that, it wasn’t easy. It was some tough conditions that we had to face as a batting unit. There were times when the Indian batters were on top of us and as bowlers we had to obviously pull it back, and massive respect has to go to our bowling unit. They showed a lot of character. Again, to get 20 wickets in a Test is a great feat.”Related

Adjudged Player of the Match for his unbeaten, second-innings 96 in the opening position, Elgar, who strung four 40-plus partnerships across the final session on day three and the best part of the fourth day in South Africa’s 240 chase, played down the multiple blows he copped on his body from the Indian pace attack.”It’s always a privilege to represent your country,” Elgar said. “I’d like to think those knocks that I take make me extra motivated to go out there and perform. Some would call it stupid, some would call a brave but I’m immensely proud of playing for the Proteas.”It doesn’t matter what I go through. I know there’s always a bigger picture, and the bigger picture is for us to win and obviously play a good brand of cricket and that’s something I’d want to instill into our young group. I want to show the guys that it’s okay to take a few blows because when you when you perform like that over four days, it’s so worth it. So yeah, it doesn’t just speak for me; it speaks for everyone within our squad.”One of his stands, worth 82 for the third wicket, had Rassie van der Dussen as the aggressor. Dussen, the right-hander in the left-right combination, struck a 92-ball 40, helping take the hosts past the 150 mark early on the penultimate day. Elgar, who added 27 to that partnership, commended his partner’s effort.”I am glad for Rassie,” Elgar said. “I know he’s been through a bit of a tough time. I think that 40 that he scored is going to go a long way for his career. I don’t think he realises that just now but those kind of moments builds character, builds personnel within your set-up and I just think from a character point of view, he’s gonna learn a hell of a lot.”Elgar also stressed the win, South Africa’s first against India in a Test at Wanderers and the hosts’ third-highest fourth-innings chase, signalled a step in the right direction towards getting long-desired stability in the team’s batting make-up.”Again, a lot of testament goes to our batters,” he said. “We we’ve been struggling a little bit over the past few seasons to get a stable batting line-up, retirements and that has happened and we had to fulfill those roles and we’ve had to be very patient. We’ve obviously entrusted those positions with guys that we feel can fulfill those roles and yeah, it was great to see and pull it off in the second innings under not easy conditions. Let’s put it that way. I think it speaks volumes for us.”

'Calm' restored to England squad after frustrating Women's Ashes build-up

Slight easing of Covid rules allows players to feel more relaxed, vice-captain Sciver says

Valkerie Baynes18-Jan-2022England have undergone a mental shift which Nat Sciver, their vice-captain, believes will go some way towards overcoming a difficult preparation for the Women’s Ashes, starting on Thursday.Speaking from Adelaide, where the squad held their first training session since introducing new, slightly eased Covid-prevention protocols, Sciver said the players had enjoyed a feeling of “calm” after being “very frustrated” by strict social distancing protocols. The shift was a physical one too, with the group holding their first in-person team meeting and allowed to gather in small groups outside.”Being together and being as one as a group is part of why we love touring,” Sciver said on Tuesday. “Being away from your family is hard and being away from your home, but then when you have that group and […] just being able to go around to someone’s room, it makes such a big difference.”That is one of the rules that changed for us. As we’re now Covid-secure, the group is secure and we can mingle a little bit more – still in smaller groups, but yeah, I think that feeling was back again today.”Today’s been the first day where I think everyone’s feeling bit more calm, whereas last week everyone was very frustrated with the rules that we’ve had to adhere by. I think everyone took a breath and enjoyed themselves. Before that, everyone was like: ‘Well, when are we going to be able to meet out? Are we going to be able to hug each other?’ The unknown was stressing people out a lot.”Related

She managed just 20 runs across the three T20Is at 6.66 with a highest score of 14 and took two wickets. Before that, she was the second-highest run-scorer behind Mithali Raj in the ODI series against India, having scored 142 runs at 71.00, while in the T20Is she was third-highest with 98 runs, including a top score of 55. She took two wickets in the ODI series and three in the T20s.”I feel good,” Sciver said. “I feel better than I finished the English summer, so I’m happy with where I am at the minute and, like I said, preparation wasn’t ideal, but I think I got the most out of it and I’m raring to go.”And she revealed her strategy for managing the demands of being an allrounder ahead of not only a multi-format Ashes series – the three T20Is will be followed by a Test and three ODIs – but also England’s 50-over World Cup defence in March.”Breaking it down has been a bit easier,” she added. “I think if I think of it all at once it can be a bit daunting. But I know that the role that I have to play is is very important and I wouldn’t want my role to change. So I know that there’s going to be hard work coming up. I’m going to be probably be very sore, but that’s where I guess all of the work that we’ve done fitness-wise and gym, strength-wise and just being on it with your recovery comes in.”Hopefully keeping physically fresh will take care of itself. Keeping mentally fresh I think will be a bit more of a challenge.”

Chetan Sharma: Everyone asked Virat Kohli 'to reconsider' stepping down as T20I captain

Chetan Sharma: Told Virat to continue as captain for the sake of Indian cricket

Everyone present in the meeting had asked Virat Kohli to reconsider stepping down as India’s T20I captain on the eve of the T20 World Cup, chief selector Chetan Sharma said on Friday.Breaking from the recent norm of announcing squads via press releases, Chetan featured in a press conference today to name the ODI squad for the three-match series in South Africa. He was asked if Kohli was indeed asked to not give up the T20I captaincy when he conveyed that decision to the board and the selectors just before the T20 World Cup.He said, he said…

Sourav Ganguly: We had requested Virat not to step down as T20 captain but he didn’t want to continue as captain. So, the selectors felt that they cannot have two white-ball captains in two white-ball formats. That’s too much of leadership.
Virat Kohli: When I decided to leave the T20I captaincy and communicated that, and I approached the BCCI first about my decision, that this is my point of view, and these are the reasons due to which I am doing this, it was received in a very nice way. There was no offence, no hesitation (from BCCI). I wasn’t told you don’t leave the T20 captaincy. Instead it was received well; I was told it’s a very progressive step and in the right direction.

“When the meeting started, it was a surprise for everybody,” Chetan said. “Because the World Cup is upon you and you hear this news, what will be the reaction of a normal person? Everyone who was present in the meeting asked him to reconsider, to rethink; ‘we can talk about this after the World Cup’. All the selectors felt this could affect the performance in the World Cup. It was told to Virat for the sake of Indian cricket to please continue as captain.”It was told to him by everybody available in the meeting. All convenors were there, board officials were there. Everybody said that. Who will not say that when you hear such a news? You will be in shock. What will be your instant reaction? It was a matter of the World Cup. We thought let’s talk after the World Cup. We told Virat the World Cup is upon us, and everybody requested let’s talk after the World Cup.Related

Kohli must scrap for his place in the changed world

Ganguly on Kohli's comments: 'Leave it to BCCI'

“But he has his plans. We have to respect his decision. If someone has taken a decision, and he said in the media also, that he was thinking [along these lines] from the time of WTC, but at that time everybody told him to think about it.”Kohli had earlier contradicted similar claims from BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, saying, “I wasn’t told you don’t leave the T20 captaincy. Instead it was received well; I was told it’s a very progressive step and in the right direction.” Ganguly had explained Kohli’s removal as ODI captain as a natural progression once Kohli gave up the T20I captaincy, which, he said, they didn’t want Kohli to give up at that time. However, Kohli’s denial created a controversy, pitting the outgoing captain’s word against that of the president’s.Chetan Sharma: “We told Virat the World Cup is upon us, and everybody requested let’s talk after the World Cup”•AFP/Getty Images

“The main goal for everybody is the same: to keep India on top. We don’t want controversies,” Chetan said. “That is the reason we don’t come out. Our job is to select the team, make sure the best guy goes and plays for the country. When these controversies happen, it makes us sad as cricketers.”I was joking that Ajaz [Patel] has been dropped by New Zealand after taking ten wickets. Imagine if we had done something similar, what would have happened to us.”Kohli’s implication, perhaps, was that he had expressed his desire to continue as Test and ODI captain when he resigned as the captain of the shortest format, but the selectors only told him 90 minutes before the meeting to pick the squad for the South Africa Tests.Chetan was asked why, then, did they not inform Kohli that if he gave up the T20I captaincy, ODI leadership would not be guaranteed either.”If Virat told you about the T20 decision, would you be able to tell at that time that we want one or two captains,” Chetan said. “That wasn’t the right time to do it, we were in the middle of a World Cup. The World Cup was upon us. We were only thinking that the decision should not affect us in the World Cup. We have to cool things down. At that time, we don’t have the time to think about split captaincy, we had only requested that this can be discussed later. Everybody in the board said that.”When you’re in the middle of the series, you can’t always say such things. You decide only when the selectors start thinking about that format. So, when the selectors discussed, and we feel we should have one white-ball captain, this is what we told Virat, and he agreed. We communicated what was on our minds, and we are always ready, 24×7, to discuss anything. There’s no problem at all.”On the decision to let Kohli know before the Test meeting and not when the time came for the ODI selection, Chetan said he wanted to give both the captains time to process the decision. “We wanted to announce it then because we don’t want to disturb them in the middle of the [Test] series [in South Africa],” Chetan said. “We gave time to Virat and Rohit [Sharma] to process it and get it into their systems.”Selectors have [always] communicated brilliantly with the board. There is no communication problem with the team management, with the captain, even with the domestic players. All five of us speak to all the domestic players because that is our job, that is our duty. We told Virat then to give everyone time. And we informed before the meeting. You can tell him only when the selectors have met and agreed. One of our selectors was in South Africa [with the ‘A’ team] so we had to get everyone together to meet.”10:58

Newsroom: Clear communication could have made change of guard smoother

Chetan explained the rationale behind the switch, which was what Ganguly had said too: “When it comes to planning, the selectors were not comfortable with two white-ball captains. So we thought we must have one white-ball captain and one red-ball captain, and he [Kohli] is the red-ball captain. It was a hard decision, but we have to take hard decisions as selectors. Same with the playing XI, you take hard decisions. We took this decision, I know Virat is an important player, and he is going to be a very important player for us in the coming days and coming years.”While at it, Chetan also quashed reports of a rift between Kohli and Rohit. Asked if they planned to have Kohli and Rohit sit down to iron things out, Chetan said, “But about what? Things are absolutely fine. That’s why I was saying don’t go by speculations. We’re all cricketers first and selectors later. There is nothing between them.”Sometimes I read reports about them and laugh. I’m telling you there is such good planning between them about the future. Things are fantastic. If you were in my place, you would have enjoyed watching how these guys are working together aa a team and family and a unit. It’s really saddening when people make up things like that. So please, leave controversies behind in 2021. Let’s talk about how to make them the best team.”Chetan said the selectors were going to resume holding press interactions when required. “We don’t want to hide anything,” he said. “Those who do something wrong usually hide things. We’re not hiding anything.”

Cerny upgrade: Rangers eyeing up move for "immense" star

Glasgow Rangers have a two-week break in the last international window of the year to reflect on the season so far and how they can improve in the months to come.

Philippe Clement will surely have mixed feelings about how his side have performed throughout the 2024/25 campaign, as the Light Blues have been miles off the pace in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers have already lost three games and dropped points in four of their ten games, which has left them in third place and nine points behind Aberdeen and Celtic in the table.

They also failed to qualify for the Champions League, losing to Dynamo Kyiv, and are currently competing in the league phase of the Europa League.

The Scottish giants have had success in the League Cup, however, as they secured their place in the final with a 2-1 win over Motherwell in the semi-finals at Hampden Park.

Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen have less than two months to prepare for the upcoming January transfer window, and could use it to bolster the squad and improve the team’s chances of having a successful second half of the season.

Rangers eyeing wing wizard

In fact, the Ibrox chiefs are already reportedly looking at new players who could come in to add to the manager’s options across the pitch in January.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Rangers are interested in Peterborough’s Kwame Poku and are one of a number of clubs in the race to land his signature.

The report claims that the Scottish giants have sent scouts to watch the Ghana international in action in League One in England this season, but they are far from the only team to have done so.

It states that Premier League duo Southampton and Ipswich Town, who are both battling relegation this season, and Championship side Burnley have also been keeping tabs on the forward ahead of a potential swoop for his services in the January window.

The Boot Room adds that the 23-year-old winger is also out of contract at the end of the season, which means that Peterborough are in a difficult position where they cannot demand a huge sum of money for his signature, as he could leave for nothing next summer.

Rangers also have an advantage over Southampton, Ipswich, and Burnley as – due to being a team outside of England – they can agree a pre-contract agreement with Poku from January onwards, whereas the English sides have to wait until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Clement and Koppen must, now, take advantage of this and strike a deal for the young whiz, whether that is in January or next summer, as he could arrive at Ibrox as an upgrade on current right-sided flanker Vaclav Cerny.

Vaclav Cerny's form this season

The Light Blues swooped to sign the Czechia international on a season-long loan from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg during the summer transfer window.

Cerny has enjoyed a relatively strong start to life at Ibrox, despite reacting emotionally to supporter frustration against Hibernian earlier this term, and has contributed with six goals and five assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

His form in the league phase of the Europa League has been particularly impressive. The left-footed winger has produced two goals and two assists in four starts in the competition, including two goals and an assist in the 4-0 win over FCSB.

Cerny has, however, had mixed success with his performances in the Premiership for the Light Blues, with struggles out of possession and moments of quality on the ball.

As you can see in the table above, the 27-year-old ace has contributed with five direct goal involvements in nine appearances, which is more than one every other game on average.

This shows that, even though he has not been an outstanding creative threat, the Wolfsburg loanee has made a big impact at the top end of the pitch.

However, his duel success rate of 28% and his failure to average even one tackle and interception combined per game shows that the winger has struggled badly out of possession, as he has not offered much defensively and has been dominated by opposition players in physical battles.

Why Kwame Poku would be an upgrade on Vaclav Cerny

The Light Blues must now swoop to sign Poku from Peterborough as the 23-year-old star has the potential to offer more in and out of possession in comparison to Cerny.

Journalist Josh Bunting once hailed his work rate as “immense” and that is backed up by his 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game in League One this season, more than twice as many as Cerny’s per match.

The Ghana international has also won 47% of his duels, winning 5.7 duels per game, which shows that he fares far better than the Rangers man in physical contests, and these statistics suggest that the youngster would be a significant upgrade on the wing from a physical and defensive perspective.

Poku’s attacking displays for Peterborough in the 2024/25 campaign also suggest that the potential is there for him to be an upgrade on Cerny in the final third for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, the current Rangers forward would need to score six goals and provide four assists in his next six Premiership games to equal Poku’s return for the Posh.

The Peterborough star, who scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in the 2023/24 campaign, has also produced two assists in two games in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy combined, taking his tally to ten goals and seven assists in 17 games.

If he can carry that kind of form over to Scotland then Clement could have a ready-made upgrade on Cerny to take over from the loanee when he returns to Wolfsburg at the end of the season.

Rangers could replace Lawrence at Ibrox by signing De Bruyne-like star

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal for the attacking midfielder.
