Their next Van Persie: Arsenal targeting move for "world-class" forward

Arsenal’s forward line has been one of the most potent in the Premier League throughout 2024/25, scoring 49 times in just 24 matches – the second most of any side in the division.

Such a record has been made all the more impressive considering that not one player in the current Gunners first-team squad has registered double figures for league goals this campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side have had 14 different goalscorers, the most of any side, but have since been targeting attacking reinforcements this month to try and give them a boost in their pursuit of current leaders Liverpool.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko have been the two players continuously linked with a move to the Emirates, but with just a handful of hours remaining, it looks unlikely that any move will be done in time for either targets.

As a result, the summer may be their best bet to try and further bolster the attacking ranks, with one player already touted with a switch to North London in the near future.

Arsenal could land leading Premier League attacker

While a deadline day addition for Arteta is now unlikely, according to The Sun, Arsenal are battling Newcastle United ahead of a potential summer move to land Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert after his impressive form throughout 2024/25.

The Dutchman has enjoyed the best season of his professional career to date, registering 11 goals and four assists in 23 outings – including a hat-trick against the Magpies back in January.

The report claims that Arteta has been closely monitoring the 25-year-old after his impressive form, but would face serious competition from Eddie Howe’s side.

He could feature in a variety of roles should he end up making the move to North London, potentially operating in the number 10 role, along with either wide position or as a central striker – offering Arteta added strength in depth.

It could also allow Kluivert to follow in the footsteps of one player who captured the hearts of many during his own time as a player at the Emirates Stadium.

Why Kluivert could be Arsenal’s next Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie joined Arsenal way back in the summer of 2004 from Dutch side Feyenoord, with many supporters not knowing what to expect after joining at the tender age of 20.

robin-van-persie-arsenal-transfer-legend-harry-kane-tottenham-hotspur-academy-wenger

However, he quickly made himself a fan favourite in North London, producing countless moments of magic, despite originally joining as a winger, before eventually shifting into a central role – similar to that of Kluivert in 2024/25.

Van Persie would go on to score 124 times in 252 appearances for the Gunners, including various memorable strikes such as his infamous volleys against Charlton Athletic and Everton at various stages of his career.

He infuriated the fanbase after swapping the Emirates for Old Trafford in 2012, joining Manchester United, but you can’t take away the impact he had as a player during his time under Arsène Wenger.

Fast-forward to the present day, the club have the opportunity to land another version of the Dutch star, with compatriot Kluivert, possessing similar traits – often able to create an opportunity out of nothing for himself or his teammates.

The 25-year-old, who’s previously been dubbed as “world-class” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored countless goals this campaign, including his long-range strike against Newcastle – with his technique similar to that of Van Persie.

He’s also averaged 1.2 successful dribbles per 90 in the Premier League this season, along with 6.2 touches in the opposition box per game – showcasing the threat he holds within attacking areas.

It’s unclear how much the Cherries would demand to part ways with their star attacker, but it’s evident that he has the skill set to massively add to Arteta’s already potent attack.

If he was to be half as good as Van Persie during his own time as a player in North London, it would be a deal worth completing – having the opportunity to become a fan-favourite and play a crucial role in ending their wait for a league triumph.

Man City reach agreement to sign "superb" £50m ace now on way for medical

Having been thrashing out a last-minute deal, Manchester City have now reportedly reached an agreement to sign yet another reinforcement in the January transfer window for Pep Guardiola.

Man City transfer news

If there was any remaining shock at just how Manchester City have attacked the January transfer window then their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal should have provided ample reason why the Blues have splashed the cash. Welcoming Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush, Guardiola will hope that all three signal the beginning of his side’s much-needed rebuild.

Those at The Etihad are not done there, however. With Deadline Day well underway, the Premier League champions have reportedly been hard at work once again as they look to ensure that their side at least finish inside the Premier League’s top four this season.

Man City plotting hijack to sign "talented" £84m gem ahead of Man Utd

He’s one to watch…

2 ByTom Cunningham Feb 1, 2025

To do just that, it’s become increasingly evident that they simply must replace Rodri before the end of the deadline. Without the injured Spaniard, the Citizens have lost the control that they became unstoppable and emphatic with under Guardiola; control which one arrival should help return.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have now agreed a deal to sign Nico Gonzalez from Porto and the midfielder is already on his way to complete a medical at the club and complete a move worth €60m (£50m).

The 23-year-old arrives with quite the task on his hands amid Manchester City’s recent struggles. Guardiola has already seen how new arrivals can crack under instant pressure but will be desperate to see the dominant state of his midfield restored through Gonzalez.

"Superb" Gonzalez must work out

If Manchester City are to stand any chance of getting back on track and ensuring that a difficult season doesn’t end in the ultimate disappointment in the race for a Champions League place, then Gonzalez must turn out to be the correct choice.

Dubbed “superb” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig at the beginning of the season, the former Barcelona man now has the chance to become an established midfielder on the biggest stage and fulfil the destiny many had for him at the Nou Camp.

Replacing Rodri will be no easy task, there’s no denying that, but Gonzalez should set his sights on doing enough to eventually earn a place next to the Spaniard at The Etihad.

'Coaching in our country is simply outstanding' – San Jose Earthquakes' Bruce Arena says he learned more from NFL, NBA, MLB coaches than international soccer coaches

The legendary soccer coach was candid and believes his philosophy was shaped more by Americans than coaches from Europe and South America

    WHAT HAPPENED

Legendary American coach Bruce Arena believes coaches from the U.S. are underrated – even compared to their peers from soccer powerhouses in Europe and South America.

"Yes, I don’t doubt that at all," Arena said when asked if he believes American coaches are disrespected or not respected at all, during an appearance on Alexi Lalas’ podcast. "And I tell these stories frequently, when I went abroad and met with coaches and sat down with them, and I was kind of surprised at where they’re at.

"And I still say to this day, I’ve learned more by talking with a coach in the NFL, the NBA, or Baseball than I have speaking with coaches in Europe or South America. And I think coaching in our country is simply outstanding, it really is."

Arena also expressed optimism about the future of U.S. soccer, pointing to the growing strength of coaching across the country.

"Have we trailed a little bit in our sport [Football]? Yes, but today you know, I look around the league and there’s some great American coaches in our league and I know that better than anybody because I’ve been around these guys for a number of years," he said. "We have some simply outstanding coaches in the league, and I think they have a great future, and our sport and our national team programs are going to be elite one day. I have no doubt about that."

Arena’s comments carry weight given his extensive experience in the American game. The legendary coach spent time with more than half a dozen MLS teams and led the U.S. men’s national team from 1998 to 2006 and again in 2016-17, crossing paths with some of modern football’s top coaching minds along the way. He is still the only U.S. manager to take the team to the World Cup quarterfinals in the modern era.

For Arena and San Jose Earthquakes, they continued their MLS season with a 1-1 draw over the Columbus Crew, which kept them in 10th place in the Western Conference. They have 10 points after as many games and have lost just twice in their last six games, a streak that includes two wins and as many draws. They face Portland Timbers next on May 3 before hosting Sacramento Republic in the Round of 32 in the US Open Cup on May 7.

Tottenham fell short in their pursuit of PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani, who joined Juventus on a season-long loan deal, with time slowly running out for technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy to get extra bodies through the door.

The Lilywhites have suffered serious squad shortages throughout 2024/2025, thanks to repeated injuries and suspensions, and Postecoglou says the north Londoners are working hard on signing quality new players before deadline day.

“Club is working hard as it can and that’s all you can ask for,” said Postecoglou on potential January incomings.

“January’s not an easy month but I do know a lot of work is being done behind the scenes to try to get some reinforcements in.”

The 59-year-old also confirmed Spurs’ previous interest in Kolo Muani, before he opted to join Juve, and Postecoglou also said that he’s not entirely fussed about losing that race for the forward’s signature.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

“For me? No,” said Postecoglou when asked if missing out on Kolo Muani was a blow.

“We were in… Well, it depends what you mean by in. We’ve been interested and were looking at a number of players. But did we get to the point where we thought he was coming to us? No.

“It is tricky as all clubs are finding. And I guess traditionally it ramps up in that final week so we’re approaching there for all clubs. It’s even trickier in January because one you try to acquire a player, the club wants to replace that player. So there’s all sorts of logistics involved.”

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies will be returning from injury sooner rather than later, but Tottenham have still been linked with a new centre-back for this window alongside an attacker.

Tottenham weighing up January bid for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori remains a target for Postecoglou’s side after he was linked at the very start of January.

It is believed that Spurs are considering a January bid for Tomori, but face competition from Juve yet again – who’ve tabled an offer to sign the former Chelsea player on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy set at around £21 million.

The Old Lady may fall short, though, as other reports suggest Tomori commands a price tag of around £25 million.

Tottenham are said to be “big fans” of the 27-year-old homegrown centre-back, and they were actually linked with an audacious swap deal for him involving Emerson Royal during Antonio Conte’s days in charge (Calciomercato Web).

Everton now chasing 16 y/o prodigy defender who can also play in midfield

Everton are interested in completing the signing of a young player who has been dubbed a “wonderful talent”, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Latest Everton news

The Blues built on their momentum from last week’s memorable 2-2 at home to Liverpool, winning 2-1 away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

David Moyes continues to do a hugely impressive job back in charge of Everton, bringing far more positive times back to the club after a doomed period under Sean Dyche. New signings will clearly be needed this summer, however, with some names mentioned as options in recent days.

Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve has been touted as a target for the Blues come the end of the season, with the 22-year-old part of a Clarets team that has incredibly conceded just nine Championship goals in the whole of the campaign to date.

Meanwhile, West Brom midfielder Tom Fellows was linked with Everton during the January transfer window, but their late efforts to snap him up ended up being in vein. That said, a new update has said that the Merseysiders will once again be in for the Englishman when the campaign reaches its conclusion.

Everton eyeing "wonderful talent" this summer

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon [via One Football], Everton are “keen” on signing Rotherham United teenager Harrison Duncan.

The 16-year-old centre-back, who can also play as a number six, is seen as a player with massive potential, and the Blues could offer him a trial at Finch Farm in the near future. He has received praise from so many in his young career to date, including from Steve Evans.

“He’s a wonderful, wonderful talent, but that’s all he is right now. He’s not ready to be playing against, say, Jay Stansfield, he’s not ready on a regular basis to be playing against someone like Jonson Clarke-Harris.

“You have to think that six weeks ago this kid was 15. He’s not 17 until next August. When we have him up here to train with the boys, it’s really good for him because it will make him better.”

Despite his tender years, Duncan has already made his debut for Rotherham, coming in the EFL Trophy back in August, and it remains his only appearance for them to date. The fact that Everton are eyeing him up suggests that they see him as a future Premier League player, however, and planning for the long-term future is always so important.

The Blues are about to embark on an exciting new era in the club’s history, moving to a new stadium and looking to become a bigger powerhouse in the English game, and signing young players with high ceilings has to be an area of focus.

Granted, experienced heads in and around their peak are also needed, but if the Blues could acquire Duncan’s signature now, it could prove to be a masterstroke over time.

MLS Power Rankings: Inter Miami unbeaten no longer, Vancouver Whitecaps continue to excel, Atlanta United and LA Galaxy tumble

Who's hot, who's not? GOAL ranks all 30 teams across Major League Soccer

Matchday 10 was a chaotic weekend of unexpected results.
FC Dallas scored three unanswered in the final 30 minutes of their match against Inter Miami to defeat the Herons, ending their unbeaten start to the MLS campaign. Without Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets or Jordi Alba in the XI, they fell apart.

Among the best in the East, though, FC Cincinnati continued their fine form with yet another victory as Kevin Denkey's brace led them to a big win over Sporting Kansas City. Charlotte FC, meanwhile, were blanked and stunned by the New England Revolution on the road as star forward Wilfried Zaha ranted on social media about the match after.

Atlanta United's woes continued as well, with the league's most high-profile spenders losing their third-straight game. They're not the only ones struggling, though.

The LA Galaxy's winless campaign continued, as the reigning champs were handily beaten by Phil Neville's Portland Timbers. Gregg Berhalter's Chicago Fire conceded SEVEN goals to Nashville SC on Saturday, too.

In the Western Conference, the Vancouver Whitecaps battered Minnesota United in a clash between the top-3 in the conference, with the Canadian side really impressing to begin the season. Real Salt Lake impressed in a big victory over San Diego FC, as Diego Luna net a brace to lead the club to three points.

Saved by Maddison: Ange must drop 6/10 Spurs star who lost the ball 13x

Seeing off Manchester United on Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur have now won back-to-back matches in the Premier League and will look to make further headway and close down Brighton & Hove Albion on the edge of the top half.

This is hardly what Ange Postecoglou will have envisaged for his second season in charge of Spurs, having also been dumped out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this month, but context is important: Tottenham have been throttled by injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloucelebrates after the match

However, there might now be real daylight at the end of the tunnel, with Tottenham pushing their way out of the selection crisis that has hit their campaign like a freight train.

To be sure, Postecoglou’s squad is on the mend, and having claimed a ticket to the last 16 of the Europa League, there’s still hope that something special can be salvaged from this testing and taxing year.

James Maddison made his return from injury on Sunday evening, darted into space to lash home from close range to score the only goal of the game. His form could be the key over the coming months.

James Maddison makes his return

One of Tottenham’s chief – if not the – playmakers, Maddison’s chequered Tottenham career has met its hurdles primarily because of injuries. His electric start in 2023/24 was halted by a ruinous ankle setback, and he has missed recent weeks of action due to a calf strain.

He returned with vim and vigour against Man United, poking in to take his tally to nine Premier League goals from 22 games this season, having also placed four assists.

James Maddison celebrates for Tottenham

Respected journalist Henry Winter commented post-match that Tottenham were “hungrier and better organised” than their counterparts, with Maddison “clinical when it counted.”

His dynamism and energy are things that Tottenham used to channel their Ange-patent slickness and bite, with Maddison ranking among the top 1% of Premier League midfielders this term for goals, the top 10% for assists and shot-creating actions and the top 5% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

A player of parts, then. Maddison wasn’t at his rip-roaring best against United but his skill set still added something of value to Tottenham’s team, helped the likes of Mathys Tel, who was wasteful yet promising, and acted as the focal creative presence, with his teammates turning to his agency.

With a trip to Ipswich Town followed by the mid-week hosting of Manchester City, Tottenham will need to use their recent success as a springboard. It might mean that Ange should issue some rotation next weekend.

The fact that this is even possible speaks volumes regarding how bad the injury crisis has been, but with frontliners back on the pitch, Ange might consider boldly dropping his captain, Heung-min Son.

Why Ange should drop Heung-min Son

Son, 32, is a Tottenham legend, having played 442 matches for the Londoners, notched 264 goal involvements and received the captaincy after Harry Kane and then Hugo Lloris left the club.

He’s been forced to shoulder quite the heavy burden this season with his teammates dropping like flies. Centre-forwards Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are currently sidelined, while Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert returned from the injury front yesterday, the former earning some game time.

Writing in his post-match ratings, football.london’s Alasdair Gold did give Son a 6/10 player rating and acknowledged his effort toward clinching a much-needed win, but he lacked some of his usual incisiveness in front of goal, also creating four key passes, as per Sofascore, but missing the mark with six of his eight crosses and squandering possession 13 times.

He’s still an important part of Tottenham’s team, not least because of his leadership skills, his galvanising quality. However, Son’s output has decreased.

A shift toward greater creative output – creating 13 big chances and averaging 1.9 key passes per Premier League match – has helped Son to stay a key member of the project, and of course, he will always be a first-class finisher, but his athleticism has slanted downward.

There’s also a case that Son benefitted from Maddison’s impetus behind him, allowing him to find greater space and security. Moreover, the excellent Djed Spence won seven of eight duels, winning four of three attempted dribbles, to create a sense of energy and urgency about Tottenham’s left flank. It’s a partnership that works well for Son, and saves him from being stretched too far.

It wasn’t Son’s worst performance of the season. He was lively and driven toward claiming an invaluable top-flight victory, also playing well in the closing stages as Tottenham scrambled to preserve their lead and clean sheet.

He’s hardly running on fumes and showed as much against Ruben Amorim’s beleaguered bunch, but Son has played an awful lot of football this season, more than Postecoglou would probably have wanted him to play.

Heung-min Son

Tottenham won’t walk into Portman Road with the false sense that three points will be a given; Ipswich have already beaten the Lilywhites in their own backyard this season.

However, with Johnson and Odobert back in the squad, Mikey Moore too, and Timo Werner also slated for a return this week, it might be wise to bench the skipper for this one, not least because he’s started ten of his club’s 12 matches across all competitions so far in 2025, playing to a high intensity.

Chalkboard

Hopefully, with strength in numbers, Tottenham can turn a corner here and push toward success to prove the many doubters wrong. Son will play a big part, but he cannot start every match.

Tottenham make contact in late January move for "special" Man City forward

Tottenham Hotspur have made an approach to sign a “special” player from Man City, as Ange Postecoglou’s side chase their first outfield winter deal in dramatic fashion.

Tottenham's scattergun January market amid injury crisis

It is never a normal day at Spurs, with club chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange desperately attempting to back Postecoglou in the final days of this window amid the club’s severe injury crisis.

Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Radu Dragusin are all set to miss Tottenham’s clash away to Brentford on Sunday, with Postecoglou in disbelief over their bad luck with injuries this season.

“Every time I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually been an oncoming train,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s player availability concerns.

“We’ve obviously got a big week, but we play Villa in the cup, and then we’ve got a clean week to Manchester United (on February 16) and that’s the week all of them are sort of scheduled to start training.

“To have a full week of training with those guys available leading into the Man United game, I think it is a little bit of a point for us to relaunch our campaign, particularly in the league, but then we have real big games of consequence in the cups coming around as well.

“I mean, that’s why I’m trying to manage the minutes of the guys we have available because we don’t want to lose anyone else.”

In botched attempts to reinforce the squad recently, Randal Kolo Muani snubbed a move to Tottenham in favour of Juventus, while Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel also rejected Spurs’ advances.

Tottenham now appear to have adopted a scattergun approach to the final 72 hours of the window, as many names are linked with moves to north London.

Tottenham make contact over signing Man City forward James McAtee

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, writing for The Boot Room, Man City attacking midfielder James McAtee is now a target for the Lilywhites.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

Tottenham have made contact over signing McAtee from City in the last 36 hours, and while it is stated that Pep Guardiola’s side are not entertaining the prospect of him leaving, what is clear is that the homegrown Englishman could tick many boxes for Postecoglou.

McAtee can play a variety of roles in the final third and may be worth a punt considering he’s hardly featured for the Sky Blues this campaign. The 22-year-old is still young with plenty of resale value, so if Levy were to pursue a permanent deal, it would also make sense from a business perspective.

The former Sheffield United star’s price tag stands at around £25m, and Guardiola has previously branded McAtee a “special” player.

“I’m so happy for him, he’s a special player,” said Guardiola after McAtee’s hat-trick against Salford City in the FA Cup.

“Making a hat-trick is not easy. He started a bit flat, I would say, but after, he has an incredible sense in front of the goal. He has the right tempo, changed the rhythm to score and [I’m] really happy for him.”
