Liverpool: Naby Keita isn’t the answer to Steven Gerrard’s heir, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is

It’s safe to say Naby Keita hasn’t lived up to his price tag since arriving at Liverpool.

Signed for a then club-record fee of £48 million, Keita was widely seen as the heir to Steven Gerrard at the club, but seven months into his debut season, the former RB Leipzig star hasn’t exactly set the Premier League alight.

Since his move to Merseyside, the Guinea midfielder has six goals and assisted another five in 27 Bundesliga appearances alone.

Of course, you can point to factors as to why Keita hasn’t done well in England from the dramatic change in teams he has played against to the pressure of being dubbed the heir to Gerrard after taking the latter’s iconic shirt number, but there are no two ways about it, the midfielder has had a stinker of a debut season.

With Liverpool chasing City in the league and Keita seemingly benched, Jurgen Klopp’s plan to bring the midfielder in as the true heir to Gerrard at Liverpool hasn’t gone to plan, but an answer for the German isn’t far away from returning.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, you remember him right? The English midfielder has been out of action since his knee injury against AS Roma in last season’s Champions League, but with former Arsenal man returning to first-team football soon, there is a good chance the 25-year-old could be back in time for some Premier League minutes this season.

Chamberlain was a success with Liverpool last season, flourishing in the midfield three and looking likely to be a part of England’s World Cup team, but of course his knee injury through those plans out the window, but with his return imminent, the versatile midfielder now has a chance to show his worth again in the team.

Unlike Keita, Chamberlain has been able to put up the numbers that matter for Liverpool, scoring five and assisting eight in all competitions for the Reds last season, and it won’t be a surprise to see Klopp decide to bring the English midfielder back into the first-team next season as the true heir to Gerrard.

Liverpool fans, would you rather have Chamberlain in the first-team over Keita? Let us know!

Didn’t put a foot wrong: Aston Villa fans buzzing with Neil Taylor

[ad_pod ]

As Aston Villa’s match with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday approached the final minutes, it looked as though the Villans were about to drop points in their quest for promotion.

However, Dean Smith’s men scored twice in injury time to win 3-1 as last gasp goals from Albert Adomah and Tammy Abraham sealed victory.

It was a game full of key moments as Steven Fletcher missed a penalty for the hosts whilst left-back Neil Taylor made a fabulous tackle to deny the same man from having a shot on goal.

It was a remarkable right footed tackle from the Welshman and fans took to Twitter after seeing a GIF of the challenge to praise the player.

Supporters of the Midlands club were quick to pick on some key points as one suggested he was an unjustified scapegoat this term. Another claimed they couldn’t believe it was the same player from the 2017/18 campaign.

One fan meanwhile focused on the entirety of the defence, suggesting that Taylor had been near faultless since Tyrone Mings had arrived.

The 30-year-old has made 25 Championship appearances this term, claiming two assists in that time.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Another poor game: West Ham fans upset with Declan Rice performance

[ad_pod ]

In the eyes of the majority of West Ham United supporters, Declan Rice has not done too much wrong since the start of the campaign.

Rice has been excellent for the Hammers for much of the season, whilst he also impressed for England during the recent international break.

Talk of potential interest from Manchester United has since surfaced, but a number of West Ham fans have criticised the 20-year-old for his performance against Chelsea.

Rice found it difficult to get into the game against the Blues, who collected all three points courtesy of a 2-0 win.

According to WhoScored, Rice only made two tackles, whilst the midfielder did not exactly cover himself in glory for Eden Hazard’s first goal of the night.

The game would certainly have been a huge learning curve for Rice, who has been criticised by his own club’s fans on social media.

Tottenham would do very well to sign Youri Tielemans this summer

Who cares about the league when Tottenham have a serious chance of winning the Champions League?! As ever, Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders this season but, should he lift the biggest trophy of them all, they better get building a statue.

Spurs weren’t given the slightest chance of winning the Champions League after a miserable group stage but now they’re in the semi-finals, anything is possible.

Just imagine it. Mouth-watering.

To think that they could mark their stadium opening by blessing it with a European trophy is unthinkable but thanks to those players on the pitch, it’s now a genuine possibility.

Still, not to be a buzzkill here, but although it could pan out to be a successful season without signing a player, those behind the scenes in North London will surely realise the need to strengthen this summer to improve their chances in all competitions next season.

The next phase of the project has to be to get back to challenging for the Premier League title, as well as making this stage of the continent’s elite competition a frequent home for the club. What’s the point in the stadium otherwise?

To that end, Youri Tielemans has massively impressed since joining Leicester on-loan and he is player that Tottenham have since taken real notice of, with Belgian outlet HLN claiming earlier this month that Spurs were continuing to track the star ahead of a potential £40m bidding war.

Furthermore, the Mirror reported last week that Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was concerned about potentially losing the Monaco ace to the likes of Spurs or Manchester United.

Tielemans, (who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt) could be seen as the replacement Spurs never got for Mousa Dembele, as the fellow Belgium international moved to China in the January window. Indeed, he’s shown an impressive level of quality since his move to the Foxes, looking great in his debut against Spurs at Wembley a few months ago.

The centre of midfield is sure to be an area that Tottenham improve upon this summer and Youri Tielemans is without a doubt the ideal signing for them to make. With Premier League and international experience already under his belt at the age of 21, Tottenham can be sure he would make a significant impact should they sign him.

Although his Leicester loan spell has been brief, Tielemans has been sensational.

With two goals and five assists, the Belgian youngster has shown exactly why he is destined for great things now and in the future.

The Chalkboard: Rondon must be Newcastle’s number one target this summer

Salmon Rondon has been brilliant for Newcastle United this season, and this incredible stat proves just how crucial he truly is.

The Venezualean striker is already a fan favourite on Tyneside and signing him should be a priority for The Toon. What this stat proves is that without Rondon, Newcastle would have been releagated a long time ago but signing him on loan with an option to buy was a stroke of genius by Rafa Benitez and has to be considered one of the signings of the season.

His hold-up-play is superb and allows for Newcastle to relieve pressure when they are defending deep, but his goal contribution has also been excellent and in particular the link-up with Ayoze Perez has proved to be a vital combination which has secured The Magpies’ Premier League status for another season.

Why signing him is crucial

The 29-year-old has done his job and it is now up to the Newcastle board to secure his permanent signature, the price of £16.5m is a snip for such an accomplished Premier League striker who suits Benitez’s game plan so well, if he were to go back to West Brom you can bet another top-flight-club would snap him up after such an impressive season for The Toon. Even if West Brom get promoted the price will be £20m which is still a bargain.

The partnership of Perez, Rondon and Miguel Almiron, which Newcastle fans have named “The Three Amigos”, has totally transformed the way Newcastle attack and to take Rondon out would leave Newcastle without that focal point, which allows Almiron and Perez to thrive, particularly the Spaniard who is in the best form of his career at the moment.

For what Rondon gives Newcastle the deal should be a no-brainier but The Toon board have a reputation of not signing players they deem will not have any re-sale value. To replace the West Brom striker it would cost as much if not more than £16mÂthough, so signing him may actually save them money.

We will have to wait till the summer to see if Newcastle do sign Rondon, but Opta’s incredible stat proves that he should absolutely be the first name on the shopping list.

That’s a real shame: West Ham fans react to news of potential Adrian exit

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Adrian is set to leave West Ham United this summer.

The 32-year-old will see his contract with the Hammers expire at the end of the season and the report has claimed that the capital outfit have no plans to offer an extension.

Adrian has been with West Ham since 2013, making 150 appearances for the club in all competitions, keeping 43 clean sheets in the process.

The 6 foot 3 stopper has only made five appearances this term, though, with Lukasz Fabianski very much the club’s number one during the 2018-19 campaign.

Adrian has not actually been the team’s undisputed first choice since the 2015-16 campaign, when he made 32 Premier League appearances.

It is not too much of a surprise that the Spaniard is looking to move on.

The West Ham fans have been on social media offering their views on the report.

Chris Wilder’s Kieran Dowell experiment failed despite victory over Preston

[ad_pod ]

If you told Kieran Dowell when he arrived at Sheffield United that he would become a left-wing-back he’d have probably laughed.

The youngster is an attacking midfielder by trade and although players breaking through have a tendency to claim they’ll play wherever for the team, this is a position where for obvious reasons he didn’t look comfortable.

The Everton man arrived in January on loan from the Premier League club but hasn’t shown too many signs of replicating the displays he turned in for Nottingham Forest last season.

Despite that, he’s still an incredibly exciting talent and after starring for England at the U20 World Cup in which they won in 2017, is one that’s been hotly tipped for a while.

Chris Wilder’s men won 1-0 with Dowell in their ranks last Saturday, but the experiment of playing him at left wing-back didn’t pay off as the 21-year-old was substituted after just 63 minutes.

KIERAN DOWELL (Preston vs Sheffield United)

33 touches

71% pass success

0 key passes

0 dribbles

0 tackles

Stats courtesy of WhoScored

After an injury to Jack O’Connell two weekends ago, Wilder was forced into bringing on Marvin Johnson to play in the left wing-back role against Bristol City after Enda Stevens was moved into the three-man defence.

It was a decision that proved disastrous for the Blades with the Yorkshire club losing 3-2 a fortnight ago, despite being in a winning position when Johnson came on.

So against Preston, the manager chose to go with Dowell and although they won it’s probably something he won’t opt for again.

Dowell’s pass completion rate wasn’t particularly amazing whilst he was ineffective going forward.

Who would make a combined Sheffield XI? Ingood Nick makes his picks in the video below…

One of the main qualities a wing back must possess are phenomenal attacking traits but he failed to provide the Blades with much in the final third, not completing a single dribble or key pass.

To get the best out of Dowell during the promotion run-in, he must play in a more advanced and central role.

Between The Lines: Wilder still unhappy with Sheffield United ownership

[ad_pod ]

Despite guiding his boyhood team to promotion to the Premier League there are still signs that Chris Wilder is unsettled at Bramall Lane as he spoke to Sky Sports News (29 April, 12:15pm).

The Blades manager has been in charge at the club since 2016 and has previously called into question the ownership.

The Yorkshire outfit are currently jointly-owned by local businessman Kevin McCabe and Saudi Arabian Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Both men have been trying to buy each other out. this has led to a lack of financial backing much to the displeasure of the manager.

Unhappy history

Last year Wilder called into question his future at the club saying that he would struggle to continue if the issues behind the scenes weren’t resolved.

“It’s 100 per cent critical it gets resolved,” he said. “I can’t do my job properly unless there is a direction and decision from them.

“Any club that wants to be successful has to have harmony, direction and a plan. There isn’t a plan, there isn’t direction, and there isn’t harmony either. That, unfortunately, is fact.

“If it stays the same, I don’t think anybody would be surprised if I didn’t question where my career is going.”

Ongoing frustrations

Fast forward 12 months and Wilder is still at the helm but the issues behind the scenes are still there. McCabe and the Prince seem to be at a stalemate and Wilder’s comments on Sky Sports News show that he isn’t hopeful ahead of the upcoming transfer window despite the club’s promotion.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (April 29, 12:15pm) the manager said:

“It’s not an open chequebook culture here, we’ve got players who will play in the Premier League who played for us in League One.”

The 51-year-old surely isn’t looking to play the same players who he utilised in League One due to loyalty or by choice. Financial restraints are holding Sheffield United back and these latest comments by Wilder perhaps show his frustrations with the ownership creeping back in.

The fact of the matter is that the only player in the current Blades squad who cost over £4 million is John Egan, a transfer which was subsided by the £11.5 million sale of David Brooks.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Although he has been able to produce incredible results on a shoestring budget so far, winning promotion twice in three years. The Blades boss has every right to complain if he doesn’t receive the funds required to keep his team in the Premier League next season.
