James Cameron’s terrific half-century helped Worcestershire to their second win in this year’s Friends Life t20 with a 14-run victory over Northamptonshire.Zimbabwean Cameron hammered 57 off 39 balls – his highest T20 score – as Worcestershire posted 142 for 5 from their 20 overs with Chaminda Vaas and Oliver Stone each taking two wickets. And despite a superb 62 not out off 42 balls by Australia international Cameron White, Northants fell short of their target as they closed on 128 for 5 to remain winless in the competition.Worcestershire won the toss and chose to bat but they lost Vikram Solanki for 8 in the second over when Stone’s delivery crashed into his leg stump. Mooen Ali was next to fall on 14 when Alex Wakely took a sharp catch at extra cover off the bowling of James Middlebrook.Cameron then completed an explosive half-century off 31 balls and Australia batsman Phil Hughes joined him on 50 off 47 deliveries as the third-wicket pair piled on 101 between them. But they departed in consecutive balls in the penultimate over when Cameron launched Vaas to Cameron White at long off before Hughes edged to Stone at short third man on 52.Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell then smashed Stone to Rob Keogh at deep square leg in the final over as the visitors gave the visitors a target of 143.The hosts lost Vaas for 9 in the fourth over when he was bowled by ex-Northants man David Lucas and their captain Alex Wakely departed cheaply by blasting Gareth Andrew to Alexei Kervezee at deep midwicket.Scotland international Kyle Coetzer went for 33 when was easily taken by Ali at long on off the bowling of Mitchell as the required run-rate crept up. Mitchell struck again when Rob White, on 4, chipped him to Netherlands international Kervezee at midwicket.James Middlebrook went for the same score when he was caught by Cameron at long on off Jack Shantry before Cameron White completed his half-century off 37 balls. But it was not enough as Northants fell to their fourth straight defeat. Their quarter-final hopes now look very slim.

PCB wants politicians to back off in Afridi case

The Pakistan board has voiced its concern over a growing interference from “a number of political functionaries” in the Shahid Afridi issue

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jun-2011The Pakistan board has voiced its concern over a growing interference from “a number of political functionaries” in the Shahid Afridi issue, which it said was “essentially an internal disciplinary matter”.”It is disappointing that despite Afridi pleading guilty to the offences, some political functionaries are extending their support with a view to influencing the disciplinary process being followed by PCB,” Ijaz Butt, the board’s chairman, said. “An understanding needs to be developed among all stakeholders, media and the politicians that no one is above the law and that, for maintaining discipline within the team, it is absolutely imperative that we carry out this process without any fear or favour.”PCB has been criticised for being ineffective in the past in the context of discipline. It would now appear an attempt by some forces to prevent the board from implementing the code of conduct may well damage Pakistan Cricket, if they continue to lend support to Afridi and exert undue pressure on PCB for their ‘non-cricketing’ interests.”Rehman Malik, Pakistan’s interior minister, was one politician who had pledged to get involved. “I will do whatever I can to resolve this issue, as I am equally a fan of Afridi,” Malik had said on Twitter. Malik had success in such matters in the past, having mediated a peace between former chairman Nasim Ashraf and Shoaib Akhtar in 2008.Butt, however, is also politically well-covered. He is appointed directly by the president of the country and board patron Asif Ali Zardari.

Jaded rivalry banks on new faces

That both India and Sri Lanka have rested their main players for the Zimbabwe tri-series is a small mercy, as some new contests might be seen

India look to rebound against Sri Lanka after a disappointing loss to Zimbabwe•AFP

The Big Picture

The greatest rivalry of our times resumes. Wait, when did it stop in the first place? Starting with the Asia Cup in July 2008, India and Sri Lanka have faced each other in a whopping 22 ODIs, six Tests, and four Twenty20s. The beauty of it is, what starts in Zimbabwe heralds a new beginning. By August 15, presuming these two teams make the finals of the three events they are playing, they will have played each other in seven more ODIs and three more Tests. And, whisper it lightly, there is a 20-day break for both the teams during the same period, which is a prime candidate for a hurriedly planned five-match bilateral.

Don’t be surprised, though, if crowds in Zimbabwe and folks on TV give this rarest of rare contests a miss and find better things to do on a Sunday afternoon. That both the sides have rested their main players for the Zimbabwe tri-series is a small mercy, as some new contests might be seen. The Indian selectors, though, have taken the whole rotation philosophy too seriously and forgotten to send a proper squad. At last glance, rotation in cricket meant resting important players in turns, one or two or three at a time. And even when players are rested en masse, the selectors usually ensure they send a balanced squad, unlike the one sent by India, which is made up of four specialist batsmen, two wicketkeeper-batsmen, three bits-and-pieces spinners, and six bowlers.Sri Lanka, for example, have rested Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya, but they have Dinesh Chandimal, Chamara Kapugedera and Jeevan Mendis, among others, as like-for-like replacements. After India proved to be the equals of Zimbabwe, the minnows of the tournament, Sri Lanka clearly are the strongest side. It will take the young Indian side, three of whom made their debuts on Friday, and only four of whom have played a Test, some regrouping to compete with Sri Lanka.

Watch out for…

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s loss of form has been sudden and inexplicable. Perhaps he got used to India on low and flat tracks and found it too much of a culture shock when other sides on better tracks came prepared for him and cramped his style. That, like the other two captains in the tournament, he will be leading an ODI side for the first time will add more pressure. After a smashing debut season, Ajantha Mendis, too, has slowly and surely become less and less effective. He will be bowling to inexperienced line-ups, and if he fails against them, it will be an ominous indicator of his future. The heat is now on the Indian new-ball bowlers. It is no new thing for the medium-pacers to be the weakest link in India’s limited-over sides, but these are new personnel, with no experience, and all by themselves in an unforgiving format.

Team news

Against Zimbabwe, India’s medium-pacers went for 148 runs in the 23.2 overs between them. What’s more, none of them troubled the batsmen. So India will be tempted to play both Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha. The only problem with that will be the presence of two part-time spinners in Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja, who are more or less imposed on the XI because of the skewed nature of the XV. Unless, of course, India choose to play two wicketkeepers in Dinesh Karthik and Naman Ojha.India (possible) 1 M Vijay, 2 Dinesh Karthik/Naman Ojha (wk), 3 Suresh Raina (capt.), 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Vinay Kumar/Ashok Dinda, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 Umesh Yadav. The last time Sri Lanka played an ODI they were badly hit by injuries. So while they lose Sangakkara and Jayawardene from that XI, they have reinforcements in Angelo Mathews and Kapugedera. There should be debate over whether they want to play two allrounders, in Mathews and Thissara Perera.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt.), 3 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 4 Thilan Samaraweera, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Thilan Thushara, 11 Ajantha Mendis.

Stats and trivia

  • Suresh Raina has played 29 of his 91 ODIs against Sri Lanka, Virat Kohli 13 out of 24, and Pragyan Ojha eight out of nine.
  • Over the last two years, India lead the head-to-head 13-8, but in multi-nation tournaments, Sri Lanka lead 4-3.

    Quotes

“We need to work on our bowling. A couple of players are playing for the first time, but hopefully they will learn from this mistake.”

“I like it here. It’s a good country. I made both my Test and ODI debuts here in Bulawayo in 1999, and I’m glad to come back as captain.”

Future hopes meet present needs as Group 2 pace-setters clash in St Lucia

England finding their range after difficult start as SA seek to maintain winning run

Firdose Moonda20-Jun-2024

Big picture: Who will give way at the top of Group 2?

What direction is the drama following these two teams going to go in next?On the face of it, things are going smoothly for South Africa. They are unbeaten at the tournament and have won matches when both setting targets and chasing but, and this is a big but, none of it has been easy. It’s not just they were pushed by former champions Sri Lanka (who actually did the least pushing) and fellow Super Eighters Bangladesh but also by three Associates: Netherlands, Nepal and USA. If England were watching, they will have seen the flaws in South Africa’s make-up, most notably in the batting. Two of the top three – Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram – have only just found form and the middle-order have not yet had the opportunity to play to their potential.England will have been more pre-occupied with their own sideshows. They survived a group-stage scare in which they were all but written off after their rain-out against Scotland and have played and lost to their biggest rivals, Australia. Their net-run-rate boosting victories over Oman and Namibia helped ensure their survival once Scotland’s challenge had faded, but their most recent win over West Indies could yet propel their campaign to a new level. It is entirely possible that three teams in a Super Eight pool of four could end up with two wins each, especially given USA’s underdog status in Group 2, and so net run-rate could provide decisive. England’s is currently at 1.34, which leaves them in a good position, and after their shaky start, they would like to think they’ve got on a roll.South Africa might argue that they are already on one, and all they have to do is stay consistent with the knockouts in sight. Their next challenge is to maintain their winning start against two former champions. England’s task is much less abstract. South Africa humbled them at the 2023 ODI World Cup, in the middle of a horror run they don’t want to repeat, and with only USA to come, they have a chance to stamp their authority on this event.

In the spotlight: Opening batters and the quickest of the quick

Both Quinton de Kock and Phil Salt played their best innings of the T20 World Cup in their last games with de Kock’s 74 setting South Africa up for a big total and Salt’s 87* helping England chase 181 against West Indies. Before those knocks, the numbers were not quite what the pair may have liked. De Kock had scores of 20, 0, 18 and 10 and Salt 37, 12 and 11. Starts, for sure and crucial to the tone of the innings, but they were not there at the end. Having players with their aggression bat through could be key on surfaces that seem to have offer runs and so how they perform in the next two matches could be key to their respective team’s semi-final hopes.South Africa have not had the challenge of consistent and genuine pace until now which makes Jofra Archer an interesting opponent. He is England’s joint-leading bowler at the tournament so far and has their best economy rate of 6.58 and could prove a handful to a top-order that is still finding its feet at the event. They’ll hope to counter-punch through Anrich Nortje , who equalled Dale Steyn’s record for the most wickets by a South African at T20 World Cups in the last match, and has looked menacing throughout. Nortje is the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker so far and has been played with respect. Will England’s batters, who enjoy pace on, show him the same?

Team news: Changes afoot for both teams?

South Africa are spoilt for choice in the bowling department and opted to bench Ottneil Baartman to accommodate an extra spinner in Antigua. That team composition could work well for them in St Lucia too but Tabraiz Shamsi was expensive against USA and they may consider left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin instead. However, given the variations he offers, Baartman could come back into contention too and it is a case of trying to fit three players into one spot.South Africa: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Aiden Markam, 4 Tristan Stubbs, 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi/Ottneil Baartman, 11 Anrich NortjeEngland stormed to a convincing win with this XI at this venue over West Indies, but the short turnaround means Mark Wood may be due a break from the action after another wholehearted, if unrewarded, display. Chris Jordan is the obvious inclusion, with Sam Curran’s left-handed options seemingly established ahead of Will Jacks, who struggled to translate his aggressive intent into runs in his two outings against Australia and Oman.England: 1 Phil Salt, 2 Jos Buttler (capt, wk), 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Jofra Archer, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Mark Wood / Chris Jordan, 11 Reece Topley

Pitch and conditions

Runs, and a fair few of them, have been available throughout the matches that have been played here with a first-innings average of 187. However, it’s not all smooth sailing for batters. There’s good bounce and carry on offer and some grip, which brought England’s spinners into play against West Indies. The one unknown is whether playing the match in the morning will make any difference to the conditions as all three matches so far have been night games. Weather-wise, there’s rain due over the weekend but the forecast for Friday is clear and humid with peak temperatures at 31 degrees.

Stats and trivia

  • The head-to-head record between England and South Africa is all-square with each team having won 12 matches against the other. At T20 World Cups, South Africa hold the upper hand and have beaten England four times in their six meetings, including their most recent clash in Sharjah in 2021.
  • Anrich Nortje is two wickets away from 50 in T20Is and Tabraiz Shamsi one away from 300 in all T20s.
  • Jos Buttler needs 19 more runs to become the ninth batter to 1,000 in all T20s this year. Currently, there are five South Africans with that many for 2024: Reeza Hendricks, Matthew Breetzke, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen and Ryan Rickelton.

Quotes

“Hopefully.”

Kagiso Rabada’s one-word answer when asked if South Africa are peaking at the right time “A lot of people say you learn when you lose, but I truly believe you learn when you win as well. It’s important to reflect on what we did well today. We had a good performance, now we’ll put that to bed and focus on the next performance.”

England’s Jos Buttler has had enough with the platitudes about the gains from losing.

Jofra Archer: 'No sense doing too much, too soon' as he builds into comeback across formats

Fast bowler says more than one Ashes Test would be ‘bonus’ as he builds across formats

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Mar-2023Jofra Archer says that he has already surpassed his ambitions in battling back from persistent injury to resume his England career, but admits that he would consider it a “bonus” if he is able to feature in more than one Ashes Test this summer.Archer, 27, is in the midst of an encouraging but cautious return to action across formats, having claimed an impressive 13 wickets at 16.92 in four ODIs and one T20I since making his international comeback for England against South Africa in January. That haul includes a career-best of 6 for 40 in Kimberley last month, and he is likely to feature in one of England’s two remaining T20Is against Bangladesh in Dhaka this week, before linking up with Mumbai Indians for the forthcoming IPL.And while the demands on his time and availability are likely to be onerous in the coming months – with the IPL season bleeding straight into England’s Test summer against Ireland and Australia in June and July – it is vastly preferable to Archer’s status this time last year, when his gruelling recovery from two elbow operations was scuppered by a stress fracture of the back.”Sometimes you’ve still got that little feeling in the back of your mind that you’re still not ready yet,” Archer said. “But I just put that behind me and, whatever happens, happens. If you’re supposed to get injured again, then there’s nothing you can do about it. But till that time comes I’m just going to give everything I’ve got.”Coming back and playing cricket for England again means I have already done what I wanted to do. I said 18 months ago I was going to be back, and now I am back hopefully I have a long career, so it makes no sense doing too much too soon.”To that end, Archer has committed to taking it easy in his final outing of the Bangladesh series, for all that England are 0-1 down after their six-wicket loss in Chittagong on Thursday.”In Bangladesh I’m not going to be charging in trying to bowl 95mph,” he said. “It sounds a little bit bad but wickets where you put everything in and you don’t get anything out, you’re just putting yourself at risk.”There is still a bit more rust I need to take off, but for now I am happy with how it’s gone, with how the body has held up. There is always more in the tank but I’m progressing and peaking at the right time.Related

“There’s a lot of cricket coming up and I’m just doing everything I can to stay on the park. I don’t think I can play all of it, it probably wouldn’t be sensible to, but whatever the medical team tells me I can do, I’m all for it.”Although he may not be back on the field in a full-time capacity just yet, Archer says that he has recognised a familiar sense of dislocation this winter, with an itinerary that has taken him from the Lions tour in the UAE before Christmas, to South Africa for the SA20, and onto his England comeback. And now, after Bangladesh, he’ll be swiftly heading for the IPL, where he hopes the shorter demands of the 20-over format will help to step up his comeback.”I think you know when you’re in the cricket mode when you actually don’t know what day of the week it is,” he said. “To be honest, I don’t even know what’s going on. But I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen at the IPL. Hopefully I can play back-to-back, or fly and play. I don’t think it’ll be as heavily restricted as when I first started. I hope not. It’s only four overs and it’s definitely not as taxing as a 50-over game, but the medical team knows best.”My time’s gone by a little bit slowly but it’s all right, you just have to find ways to keep yourself occupied,” he added. “There’s no reason to be upset about it or anything. I’ve had a lot of downtime before, it doesn’t bother me that much.”Further afield, however, Archer recognises the opportunity that is presenting itself in 2023, with a home Ashes summer followed by England’s defence of the 50-over World Cup – the same twin peaks with which he announced his arrival on the international stage in his maiden England summer four years ago.”It’s pretty similar actually,” Archer said. “If you caught form at the right time in 2019, you probably would have been able to carry it throughout the whole summer, whereas now you’ve got a couple of months before the World Cup.””Hopefully this summer will have the opportunity to surpass it, but I don’t think there’ll be many other summers of cricket that are better than that. If I can play one game this summer, I’ll be happy. If I play more than one, that’s a bonus.”

Mohammad Rizwan signs Sussex contract for County Championship, T20 Blast

Pakistan wicketkeeper will be available from April until mid-July

Matt Roller16-Dec-2021Mohammad Rizwan will play county cricket for the first time in 2022 after signing a deal to play for Sussex between April and mid-July.Rizwan will arrive in England after the conclusion of Australia’s tour to Pakistan on April 5 and will be available for the majority of the County Championship season and the whole of the T20 Blast. He will open the batting alongside Luke Wright in the Blast, replacing Phil Salt – who has left for Lancashire – as a top-order keeper/batter, and is a replacement for Ben Brown in the Championship side following his request to be released from his contract two years early.Rizwan is the fourth Pakistan international to sign for a county for 2022 after Shan Masood (Derbyshire), Zafar Gohar (Gloucestershire) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Middlesex) and with a relatively clear window in their international schedule in the first half of the season, it would be no surprise if more players were to follow.Related

Ian Salisbury, Sussex’s Championship and 50-over head coach, said that his former county team-mates Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq had provided character references for Rizwan which suggested he would be “a wonderful addition to our dressing room”.”I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really disappointed to learn we’d be losing a player of Ben Brown’s quality,” Salisbury said. “Now that has happened, though, we have to look forward and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to act quickly over the last week or so to secure the services of one of the world’s best keeper-batters as a replacement.”Mohammad’s first-class and Test records speak for themselves and it’s a huge coup to welcome him to Sussex for a big chunk of next season’s Championship. He and Travis [Head] are exactly the kind of experienced, international cricketers that our emerging lads can learn a huge amount from.”Sussex won the wooden spoon in last year’s County Championship, finishing bottom of Division Three with a young team. As well as Rizwan, they have signed Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Steven Finn this winter and Travis Head is due to return as captain – and the club’s other Championship overseas player – despite struggling in his first season at Hove.James Kirtley, Sussex’s T20 coach, described Rizwan as “one of the most exciting cricketers in the world” and said that he was “an excellent replacement” following Salt’s departure. “I am extremely pleased to be filling that gap with an international player of his calibre,” he said.
“He is a natural leader and a player who will inspire. I am very much looking forward to welcoming him to Sussex as the latest in a long line of successful cricketers that have played for Pakistan and Sussex.”

Sana Mir routs South Africa women for 63

The offspinner took 4 for 11 in her six overs to dismiss the hosts for their second-lowest total in ODI cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2019
Offspinner Sana Mir claimed 4 for 11 in her six overs to dismiss South Africa women for 63 – their second-lowest total in ODI cricket. Mir took the new ball alongside 17-year-old medium-pacer Fatima Sana and removed four of South Africa’s top five inside eight overs. There would be no way back for the hosts in Potchefstroom. That they passed fifty was down to Mignon du Preez (18) and Chloe Tryon (21). Those two were the only South Africa batsmen to reach double figures in an innings that lasted all of 22.5 overs. Nashra Sandhu and Nida Dar backed up Mir by picking up two wickets each. Chasing a slim target, Pakistan women got home with eight wickets and 212 balls to spare. This was Pakistan women’s biggest ODI victory in terms of balls remaining.Mir had set the foundation for the win by taking the wickets of opener Laura Wolvaardt and captain Sune Luus in her first over. She missed the hat-trick, but triggered a terminal slide.Marizanne Kapp, playing her 100th ODI, struck early for South Africa, as did Shabnim Ismail, but Javeria Khan and captain Bismah Maroof made light work of the chase with an unbroken 38-run stand – the highest in the match.

A patient hundred from Victoria opener Travis Dean was an outlier on a freewheeling day of scoring for the Bushrangers against Western Australia at the WACA.Dean made 111 from 195 balls with 18 fours and one six to help the Bushrangers to a strong position midway through the first day after Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat. Dean and Marcus Harris put on 113 for the opening wicket. Glenn Maxwell made an entertaining 47 from just 52 balls to push the score to 1 for 193 after 50 overs of play. But Maxwell, Will Pucovski and Dean were dismissed in the space of 12 overs to halt Bushrangers’ momentum. Dean fell to a stunning diving catch from Simon Mackin at mid-on. Cameron White steadied with his fourth consecutive 50-plus score. Wicketkeeper Sam Harper played a late cameo to push the total to 9 for 375 at close. The Warriors used seven bowlers, all of whom conceded more than 3 runs per over.

Angelo Mathews unavailable for Australia tour due to injury

Sri Lanka Cricket have announced that Angelo Mathews will not be touring Australia for the T20 series due to a hamstring injury sustained on the South Africa tour

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Feb-20170:48

Quick Facts – Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews’ hamstring injury will keep him out of the forthcoming T20 series in Australia, Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed. A stand-in captain is expected to be named on Tuesday, when the selectors decide on the squad.Mathews has been in Sri Lanka since he sustained the injury during his match-winning innings in the second T20 against South Africa. Dinesh Chandimal took the reins in the final T20 of that series, before Upul Tharanga assumed interim leadership of the ODI side.Sri Lanka’s selectors now face a minor dilemma about who should take over the side in Mathews’ stead, as both Chandimal and Tharanga do not necessarily make the T20 XI on present form. Chandimal made scores of 6 not out, 22 and 5 in the three T20s against South Africa, and Tharanga only played the last of those matches, hitting 20 off 11 balls. Barring the tour game in December, neither batsman has hit a fifty in any format in the ongoing tour.”The selection meeting on Tuesday will decide the squad and the captain who will lead in the three matches,” a board statement said. “The team will arrive in Canberra on Monday the 13th.”Sri Lanka are expected to play a practice T20 in Canberra on February 15, before flying to Melbourne on 17th for the first of three T20Is.
