Kulatunga stars in Wayamba victory

A round-up of the first set of matches in the SLC Inter-Provincial Tournament 2009-10

Sa'adi Thawfeeq22-Mar-2010Jeevantha Kulatunga continued his good run of form with the bat, hitting an unbeaten century off 101 balls to guide Wayamba to a convincing seven-wicket win over Basnahira South in the opening weekend of the Inter-provincial four-day tournament. Wayamba’s victory was achieved inside three days as Basnahira South failed to counter the wily left-arm spin of Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath who finished with match figures of 8 for 141.Basnahira South never recovered from their poor first innings total of 120 after choosing to bat first. Their batting was wrecked by Chanaka Welagedera (4 for 37) and Herath (3 for 12). Even though they put up a better display in the second innings to score 352, Wayamba were left to chase 224 to win with plenty of time to spare. Although they lost openers Michael Vandort and Mahela Udawatte cheaply, Kulatunga took control of the bowling from there onwards and figured in two century partnerships with his captain Jehan Mubarak who made 61 and Damitha Hunukumbura, who was unbeaten on 55 to ensure victory. In a high-scoring match at Moors SC grounds, Kandurata established a new domestic record by piling up the highest total – 727 all out – against Basnahira North. The previous highest total was 683 by Colombo Colts CC against Galle CC at the NCC grounds in 2003-04. Sri Lanka middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera, leading Kandurata in the absence of Kumar Sangakkara who is away for the IPL, led the way with a superb double century as his team took up the challenge of overhauling Basnahira North’s first innings total of 530. Samaraweera scored 214 off 355 balls and was involved in a double century partnership of 274 for the fifth wicket with Jeevan Mendis who made 150.Kandurata passed Basnahira North’s total losing only half the side and further frustration followed when Sri Lanka spinner Suraj Randiv added to his four-wicket haul by bolstering the lower order with an entertaining innings of 74 off 89 balls, helping his captain put on 91 runs for the seven th wicket. He picked up a further three wickets in the second innings for matches figures of 7/230. The Kandurata run chase was launched by openers Nadeera Nawala (113) and Kanchana Gunawardena (64) who put on 122. Five half-centuries featured in the Basnahira North first innings.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Three Lions had already secured their place in the Euro 2024 finals before the match kicked off. They go through as Group C winners, coming in six points ahead of Italy, who confirmed their qualification with a 0-0 draw against Ukraine on Monday.

  • WHAT KANE SAID

He posted on social media: "Not the win we wanted but an unbeaten qualifying campaign and top of the group. Bring on the Euros in the summer! Thanks for all the support."

He added to : "Difficult game, we knew it would be and it was tough against a decent side playing on a pitch that's difficult to play our style of football. "We went 1-0 behind against the run of play with a soft penalty. It was good to get on the pitch, I'm always trying to help the team whether it is 90 minutes or 10 minutes. It was important for us to get a goal back and a shame we couldn't get a second. "I think it was an own goal, pretty sure. If anyone was going to get a second it was us."

Jude Bellingham isn't a left-winger! Winners and losers as Carlo Ancelotti gets it all wrong for Real Madrid in derby defeat to Atletico

The Italian coach opted to start five central midfielders at the Metripolitano, but it didn't work at all as Los Blancos lost 3-1

In recent years, Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid have been immune to the challenges that have come with major games. This is a side that does not fear the biggest occasions, mainly because their manager does not allow it. Ancelotti has his system, his players, and his philosophy. There are tweaks — there have to be some — but no rival has brought about drastic change.

That is, until Sunday. Ancelotti had a rare tactical blip in one of his poorer days as Madrid manager, setting up a puzzling system that saw his side battered on the break by an eager Atletico team who ran out 3-1 winners in the Madrid derby.

The troubles were clear early on as Atletico embarked on a sweeping move down the left wing, with Samuel Lino afforded the time to reflect on the necessary angles, peer into the open space available to him, and deliver a whipped cross that Alvaro Morata simply nodded home.

Atletico added a second shortly after. This one came down the same wing with Saul, enjoying something of a revival after a forgettable loan spell at Chelsea, finding Antoine Griezmann, who rose from the penalty spot, entirely unmarked, to put his team 2-0 up. The third was nearly identical. Saul delivered the pass again for Morata to creep into a yard of space to evade three static Madrid defenders.

And those three crucial moments decided the contest. Ancelotti played five midfielders and no real striker, put Jude Bellingham on the wing, and asked a 38-year-old Luka Modric to start for the second game in a row. The Madrid attack was as discombobulated as expected, the only goal coming from a 20-yard Toni Kroos effort.

Changes did eventually come late in the game, Ancelotti abandoning his new system in favour of the 4-4-2 diamond that had handed Madrid a perfect start to the season. But his mishaps had done their damage, Madrid slumping to a derby loss to the tune of a tactical and defensive nightmare.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Metripolitano…

WINNER: Alvaro Morata

Few would have guessed that Atletico's often maligned striker would prove to be the difference between the two sides, but Alvaro Morata's brace was vital.

His role was stripped down from an attacking perspective here. The forward only had 28 touches all game, and was seldom involved off the ball. Instead, he provided an able body in transition, and, crucially, a clinical finisher when required.

Madrid will feel, correctly, that they should have defended Morata more effectively. Still, he took both of his goals well, meeting angled crosses and judging his headers expertly, leaving Kepa Arrizabalaga helpless on both occasions.

Morata is, contrary to social media belief, a rather decent centre-forward, despite all of the criticism levelled at him on a weekly basis. He showed just how impactful he can be on Sunday evening.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: David Alaba

In the 47th minute, after Morata bagged his second goal, David Alaba turned around, looked angrily at his team-mates, and pounded the Metropolitano turf. But for all of his protestations, the Austrian could only blame himself. For the second time in the fixture, he had lost the Spanish striker, and been far too easily exploited with a simple cross.

It was the culmination of a rare poor showing from Alaba, who always seems to get the fundamentals right. He doesn't usually lose his man, or miss a header. He tends to time his tackles, and read passing lanes. Against Atletico, though, he was all over the place.

He can certainly be blamed for both of Morata's goals, and didn't offer much help on the Atletico second either, failing to communicate with his centre-back partner Antonio Rudiger as Griezmann found far too much space. He doesn't have bad nights often; this one was awful.

WINNER: Barcelona

It is certainly too early in the season to be calling the Liga title race. Barcelona and Real Madrid will likely compete deep into the fixture list for the crown, these two fundamentally flawed but immensely exciting sides engaging in what should be an intriguing duel.

And although we are far too early to extrapolate points, performances and results into anything concrete, this would have made for a nice watch for the Blaugrana, especially after their own epic comeback win on Saturday.

Madrid were easily exploitable here, their defensive weaknesses laid bare. It is perhaps a showing that others can take inspiration from, too. Hit Madrid on the break, exploit the wings, and you will have a chance. And if this was the game that showed Madrid's biggest flaws — and gave other sides a clue as to how they might take a point or three off Los Blancos — then Barca might just have the upper hand in the weeks to come.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Luka Modric

Ancelotti has promised for a year now that Modric would be steadily phased out of the Madrid line-up. He admitted in February that both the Croatian and Kroos would have to accept a "moment of transition" in the Spanish capital, and suggested that they will not be regular starters this year. On Sunday, it was easy to see why.

Modric appeared in the Madrid line-up for the second straight game, just five days after playing 70 tricky minutes against Union Berlin. And he looked tired from the first whistle, overwhelmed by the pace and bite of the contest. He struggled to get back, and was uncharacteristically squalid on the ball.

He played only 45 minutes, touched the ball 38 times, and didn't create a single chance. This was not the showing of the former Ballon d'Or winner. Rather, it was the trudge of a 38-year-old starting to look his age.

A única mudança será no gol.

Wellington cruise home with Murdoch fifty

A round-up of the Georgie Pie Super Smash matches on November 16, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Nov-2014A 35-ball 61 from Stephen Murdoch charged Wellington to an eight-wicket win with rather ease against Central Districts in Auckland. Chasing 146, Wellington were led by a second-wicket stand of 91 runs in 9.3 overs which helped them collect four points with four overs to spare.Put in to bat, Central were troubled by pacers Brent Arnel and Dane Hutchinson, who picked up two wickets apiece and conceded 48 runs together in eight overs. George Worker’s 50-ball 58 steered the innings along with a 45-run partnership with Jamie How. However, regular wickets dented the middle order and a late 15-ball 20 from Kruger van Wyk lifted them to 145.Wellington lost Matthew Taylor for a duck before Michael Pollard and Murdoch charged them towards 100. Pollard fell for 44, after hitting four fours and three sixes, and Murdoch and Brad Hodge put together 53 runs in under five overs to take them home.A half-century from Dean Brownlie, followed by an incisive performance from Northern Districts’ bowlers set up the team’s 11-run win against Auckland at Eden Park, keeping them firmly at the top of the table. Having been inserted, Northern Districts were precariously placed at 76 for 3 before Brownlie and Daryl Mitchell led a recovery with a 51-run stand. Brownlie struck five fours and three sixes during his 57 off 33 balls, while Mitchell chipped in with a 21-ball 24, lifting the total to a competitive 158 for 7.Auckland’s top and middle-order batsmen all made starts during the chase, but could not build on and string together a meaningful partnership. Donovan Grobbelaar top-scored with 30 and three other batsmen pitched in with twenties, but the team lacked the required acceleration. Ben Laughlin took 2 for 31, while Scott Kuggeleijn and Anurag Verma both went at under five an over, ensuring that Auckland fell just short.Cam Fletcher’s run-out off the last ball of the match meant that Otago held on for a one-run win against Canterbury in Christchurch. Chasing 144, Henry Nicholls’ 56 dragged Canterbury to 141 for 6, with three needed from the last two balls. However, Dirk Nannes dismissed Nicholls with the penultimate ball of the match and Fletcher was found short coming back for a second run in the final delivery, as Otago secured their first victory of the competition. Nannes was the pick of the bowlers, collecting 2 for 19, while James McMillan took 2 for 28. Earlier, Ryan ten Doeschate had blasted three fours and four sixes during a 36-ball 63 to help Otago counterattack from a shaky 90 for 5,to make 143 for 7. It helped them negate the early blows inflicted by Canterbury seamer Matt Henry, who had wrecked Otago’s top order with 3 for 19.
