Sana Mir routs South Africa women for 63

The offspinner took 4 for 11 in her six overs to dismiss the hosts for their second-lowest total in ODI cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2019
Offspinner Sana Mir claimed 4 for 11 in her six overs to dismiss South Africa women for 63 – their second-lowest total in ODI cricket. Mir took the new ball alongside 17-year-old medium-pacer Fatima Sana and removed four of South Africa’s top five inside eight overs. There would be no way back for the hosts in Potchefstroom. That they passed fifty was down to Mignon du Preez (18) and Chloe Tryon (21). Those two were the only South Africa batsmen to reach double figures in an innings that lasted all of 22.5 overs. Nashra Sandhu and Nida Dar backed up Mir by picking up two wickets each. Chasing a slim target, Pakistan women got home with eight wickets and 212 balls to spare. This was Pakistan women’s biggest ODI victory in terms of balls remaining.Mir had set the foundation for the win by taking the wickets of opener Laura Wolvaardt and captain Sune Luus in her first over. She missed the hat-trick, but triggered a terminal slide.Marizanne Kapp, playing her 100th ODI, struck early for South Africa, as did Shabnim Ismail, but Javeria Khan and captain Bismah Maroof made light work of the chase with an unbroken 38-run stand – the highest in the match.

Travis Dean ton headlines Victoria's day

The visitors piled up 9 for 375 on a free-scoring first day at the WACA

A patient hundred from Victoria opener Travis Dean was an outlier on a freewheeling day of scoring for the Bushrangers against Western Australia at the WACA.Dean made 111 from 195 balls with 18 fours and one six to help the Bushrangers to a strong position midway through the first day after Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat. Dean and Marcus Harris put on 113 for the opening wicket. Glenn Maxwell made an entertaining 47 from just 52 balls to push the score to 1 for 193 after 50 overs of play. But Maxwell, Will Pucovski and Dean were dismissed in the space of 12 overs to halt Bushrangers’ momentum. Dean fell to a stunning diving catch from Simon Mackin at mid-on. Cameron White steadied with his fourth consecutive 50-plus score. Wicketkeeper Sam Harper played a late cameo to push the total to 9 for 375 at close. The Warriors used seven bowlers, all of whom conceded more than 3 runs per over.

Angelo Mathews unavailable for Australia tour due to injury

Sri Lanka Cricket have announced that Angelo Mathews will not be touring Australia for the T20 series due to a hamstring injury sustained on the South Africa tour

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Feb-20170:48

Quick Facts – Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews’ hamstring injury will keep him out of the forthcoming T20 series in Australia, Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed. A stand-in captain is expected to be named on Tuesday, when the selectors decide on the squad.Mathews has been in Sri Lanka since he sustained the injury during his match-winning innings in the second T20 against South Africa. Dinesh Chandimal took the reins in the final T20 of that series, before Upul Tharanga assumed interim leadership of the ODI side.Sri Lanka’s selectors now face a minor dilemma about who should take over the side in Mathews’ stead, as both Chandimal and Tharanga do not necessarily make the T20 XI on present form. Chandimal made scores of 6 not out, 22 and 5 in the three T20s against South Africa, and Tharanga only played the last of those matches, hitting 20 off 11 balls. Barring the tour game in December, neither batsman has hit a fifty in any format in the ongoing tour.”The selection meeting on Tuesday will decide the squad and the captain who will lead in the three matches,” a board statement said. “The team will arrive in Canberra on Monday the 13th.”Sri Lanka are expected to play a practice T20 in Canberra on February 15, before flying to Melbourne on 17th for the first of three T20Is.

Gujarat into knockouts after brushing past Kerala

A round-up of the Vijay Hazare Trophy Group B matches played on December 18, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Dec-2015Gujarat joined Jharkhand in the knockouts from Group B after brushing past Kerala by seven wickets. Gujarat and Jharkhand finished with 20 points each from six games. Having chosen to bowl, Gujarat bowled Kerala out for 102, with Axar Patel picking up three wickets and Rush Kalaria, Rohit Dahiya and Jasprit Bumrah taking two each. For Kerala, it was a second successive batting failure, having been shot out for 49 by Karnataka on Thursday. Sachin Baby (41) was their only batsman to cross 15.Gujarat had a slight wobble when they lost both their openers in the space of two overs – with only one run coming between the two dismissals – to slip to 21 for 2. But the target was modest, and Himayala Barad (24), Rujul Bhatt (35*) and Chirag Gandhi (20*) ensured they got there comfortably, with 17.1 overs remaining. The result ended the qualifying hopes of defending champions Karnataka, even though they ended their campaign with a 207-run thumping of Jammu and Kashmir. Sent in to bat, Karnataka powered their way to an imposing 349 for 5, riding on the back of a CM Gautam’s unbeaten 102-ball 109. Gautam added 145 for the fifth wicket with Manish Pandey (79 off 70 balls), and 91, off only 37 balls, with Vinay Kumar, who smashed an unbeaten 51 off 20 with three fours and five sixes.Chasing 350, J&K made a poor start, losing both their openers within the first four overs. Bandeep Singh (42) and Ian Dev Singh (35) kept them interested for a while with third-wicket stand of 78 at 8.06 runs per over, but collapsed after Sreenath Aravind dismissed both of them in the same over. J&K lost their last eight wickets for 50 runs, their innings ending as early as the 28th over.Karn Sharma’s five-wicket haul helped Railways end their campaign with a 106-run win over Haryana. Chasing 220, Haryana were bowled out for 113, inside 36 overs, as the legspinner Karn finished with figures of 5 for 13 in 9.1 overs. Only Nitin Saini (20) and Rohit Sharma (26) got past 20 among the Haryana batsmen.Sent in to bat, Railways made 219 for 7 in their 50 overs, with Arindam Ghosh anchoring their innings with a 118-ball 76. Ghosh struck five fours and a six, and added 77 with Karn (29) for the fifth wicket.

'I am innocent' – Sreesanth

Sreesanth protested his innocence on a day when he, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were remanded to another five days in police custody

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2013In his first public statement since his arrest last week, Sreesanth has denied any wrongdoing. Sreesanth and his two Rajasthan Royals team-mates, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, who were arrested on Thursday for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing, were remanded on Tuesday by a Delhi court to a further five days in police custody. They were charged by Delhi Police under three laws of the Indian Penal Code: Section 409, which deals with criminal breach of trust and is a non-bailable offence; Section 420 which deals with deal with fraud and cheating; and Section 120B, which deals with deals with criminal conspiracy. The Delhi Police had registered cases against the players under Sections 420 and 120B when they were arrested in the early hours of May 16. The charge under 409 was added to the list following Rajasthan Royals’ complaint against the three*.”I am innocent and have done no wrong,” Sreesanth said in a statement emailed by his lawyer, Rebecca John. “I have never indulged in any spot-fixing.” He said he was confident that his name would be cleared. “As a cricketer, I have learnt to take knocks along with accolades, in my stride. I recognise that I am going through a tough period in my life. I have utmost faith in our judicial process and I am confident that with time I will be proved innocent, and my honour and dignity will be vindicated and restored.”His statement came on a day when he was first sighted since his arrest, dressed in a blue T-shirt on his way to court. At the hearing, the police told the court that they were analysing the recorded conversations of players and bookies. Voice samples of the accused had been taken to match them with the recorded conversations. Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan told the magistrate that during the investigation several new names had cropped up and their details would be submitted to the court in a sealed cover on Wednesday.Sreesanth’s advocate John opposed the plea for police remand saying no ground was made out for seeking his further custody. She said the agency had made all recoveries and confronted all the accused with one another for the past five days. The decision to charge the cricketers under Section 409, which carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment, is seen as unusual as the law applies to a “criminal breach of trust” by anyone considered a “public servant” or “in the way of his business as a banker, merchant, factor, broker, attorney or agent.” There were, however, two possible lines of arguments that the law could be applied to cricketers, according to Vidushpat Singhania, sports law expert and principal associate, Lakshmi Kumaran and Sridharan. The first was that, “the player is acting as an agent, in this case of Rajasthan Royals – he has been entrusted with a property under the contract with Rajasthan Royals – and he has breached that trust.”The second argument that could be made was that a player could be considered a public servant because, “he has, in Sreesanth’s case for example, represented India and he has again, breached that trust they have in him.” In February 2011, the Supreme Court had, for example, upheld a Kerala High Court decision that the state’s cricket association officials could in any case, be considered “public servants”.Singhania said should this charge carry through and be upheld by the court, the punishment would be very stringent and could set a precedent in the future for cases involving fraud on the part of athletes, even without the introduction of a new law pertaining to fixing in sport. “There are provisions of criminal law that make it possible for it to be interpreted for the larger public good against a criminal offence.”However, it would appear that the first argument is the one being employed in this case. According to a report in the , Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said Section 409 was invoked because Sreesanth had violated the terms of his Royals’ contract. The contract and its financial benefits, he said, were decided upon as per Sreesanth’s “past experience and his match-winning abilities and it was an exclusive contract which granted him playing rights and performing rights, and the agreement did not allow performance for individual gain”.Sreesanth’s advocate John countered that he was not entrusted with any property, or with any dominion over property, to be charged under this offence. In a separate development, Mumbai Police announced it had made three fresh arrests, including that of Virendra Dara Singh Randhawa, also known as Vindoo, the son of famous Indian wrestler Dara Singh.”The first [arrest] is that of Alpesh Patel, who was a operator connected to these bookies. We have recovered Rs 1.28 crores (US$230,000) in cash from his premises,” Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) in Mumbai, said.”[Vindoo] has also been arrested for links with bookies who have been arrested by us (on Saturday),” Roy said. “The third is Prem Taneja. There are in remand till May 24.”Meanwhile, reports that the government-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd suspended Sreesanth, who was employed as an assistant manager in its marketing division and posted at Irumpanam, near Kochi.04.15GMT, May 22: This article has been updated after details on the charges against the players emerged

Pomersbach was produced in a Delhi court the same day, when he was granted interim bail. The Delhi Police have submitted in court footage from the CCTV and a medical report regarding the nature of injury caused to the woman and her fiancé.”Obviously, I am very relieved after what happened in the court today,” Pomersbach said. “I am happy with the support I have got from my family and girlfriend back home and the RCB. England pair Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann shared four wickets on their return to county duty as Nottinghamshire fought back to dismiss Sussex for 304 on the first day of the County Championship match at Hove. Sussex looked like making the most of winning the toss when openers Ed Joyce and Chris Nash posted their third century stand of the season. But Sussex were never the same after Joyce and Luke Wells fell just before lunch.A dry pitch is already turning, albeit slowly, and five of the wickets fell to spin. Swann removed Joyce with his 10th delivery while Samit Patel finished with 3 for 37 including skipper Mike Yardy and Nash, who passed 50 for the fifth time this season without converting it into a hundred.Nash and Joyce scored at five-an-over for most of the morning session with Nash, who raced to 50 off 35 balls, taking full advantage of some wayward bowling, particularly from Andre Adams. But Swann struck in his second over when Joyce was leg before to a ball which turned and struck him high on the pad and just before lunch Wells, who has scored two centuries already this summer, was bowled for a 21-ball duck by Patel.Murray Goodwin struck Adams for two fours in an over but the New Zealander broke through when wicketkeeper Chris Read ran backwards to take an excellent diving catch off a mis-timed pull to leave Sussex on 119 for 3.Matt Prior, who was also making his Championship return, added 70 in 17 overs with Nash to regain the initiative but Swann returned to the attack and struck straightaway when Prior sliced Swann’s first ball back to cover. Nash had looked untroubled, hitting 13 fours in 205 minutes in moving to his highest score of the season. But seven short of his hundred he missed a straight one from Patel and was did not look surprised when the leg before appeal was upheld.Yardy, also making his first Championship appearance of the season as he recovers from depression, helped England team-mate Luke Wright put on 39 for the sixth wicket either side of tea. But Patel struck again when he turned one as Yardy tried to drive and Adam Voges snapped up the edge at slip.Wright took the attack to Swann, twice striking him off the front foot to the boundary in an over, and was going well on 33 when Broad returned to the attack and to have him caught down the leg side. Broad was in business again later in the over when his nip-backer trapped James Anyon and Sussex were still 18 short of securing a third batting point when
Amjad Khan played across his pads to give the persevering Luke Fletcher a wicket. But Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, mixing careful defence with the occasional attacking flourish, made an unbeaten 43 off 52 balls with six fours and helped last man Monty Panesar take the score to 304 before Panesar played on to give Adams his 500th first-class wicket.Panesar is likely to have plenty of work as the contest unfolds and he and his team-mates finished the day on a positive note when Rana struck in his second over with the new ball, bowling left-hander Neil Edwards via an inside edge as Notts closed on 5 for 1.

Jaques powers Worcestershire to victory

Worcestershire’s recovery from relegation to Division Two of the County Championship – and a subsequent £300,000 cut in their playing budget – continued at New Road as they overcame Derbyshire by eight wickets to register their third win of the season

Worcestershire’s recovery from relegation to Division Two of the County Championship – and a subsequent £300,000 cut in their playing budget – continued at New Road as they overcame Derbyshire by eight wickets to register their third win of the season.A revamped side finally dismissed the visitors for 389 and then cantered to a target of 126 with 14.1 overs to spare as Phil Jaques narrowly missed the fastest championship century of the season. The Australian left-hander romped to 94 from 57 balls with two sixes and 17 fours, but with only four needed for victory, he was caught on the deep square-leg boundary off Robin Peterson.Jaques got the run-chase under way with four fours in succession off Tim Groenewald and a game that Derbyshire fought so hard to save was snatched away from them as he reached 50 from 35 balls. Vikram Solanki and Jaques both cleared the fence in the same over from Peterson as the home side moved up to third place in the table. An extensive and fascinating last day was available to anyone walking in off the street after Worcestershire officials – possibly anticipating a much earlier finish – offered free admission. Athough Derbyshire mustered resilience after being made to follow on 264 behind, Garry Park’s fourth career century – all of them not out – merely delayed another defeat after their mauling by Middlesex last week. The South African-born batsman gradually found some form, moving from 34 overnight to an unbeaten 116 from 288 balls, but Worcestershire’s seam quartet persevered until they had shared all 20 wickets in the match.Greg Smith added only 13 before he was caught down the leg-side off Richard Jones for 64 and Chesney Hughes, the left-handed teenager from Anguilla, fell for 20, pushing a bat-pad chance to short leg off Jack Shantry.Derbyshire, still 81 behind on starting the last day at 183 for 3, had reduced the deficit to only four when Worcestershire made their final push on taking the new ball. It worked initially with wickets in quick succession for Alan Richardson and Jones, but Park’s craft and determination gave the lower order an incentive to hang around. They did this so well that the last three held up Worcestershire for more than two hours. Park reached his hundred with a pick-up for six and the number 11, Steffan Jones, followed up his 86 in the first innings with 21 before Richardson claimed his sixth wicket of the game in his 58th over.

Curran: 'Cricket is turning into baseball, isn't it?'

“Stats definitely going out of the window,” Punjab Kings captain says after his team pulls off a world-record chase against KKR

Jaffer on Bairstow’s ton: ‘It’s mind-boggling’

After Punjab Kings ripped up the record books by mowing down 262 with eight balls to spare, their captain Sam Curran was left wondering if cricket was turning into an entirely different sport.”Cricket is turning into baseball, isn’t it? It was absolutely incredible,” Curran mused at the post-match presentation. “Where do we [start]? Absolutely delighted with two points. Games like that are out of the world, but most importantly we’ve had a tough few weeks as a team [this was Kings’ first win in five games] but we’ve really hung in there. We’ve taken teams down to the wire and, I think, forget about the scores… I thought we actually deserved victory.”The way batters have raised the ceiling of their hitting, a total of 300 has looked like an increasingly realistic prospect at different points this season. Seven of the top-eight IPL totals have come this season, with PBKS slotting in at six there with their record chase at Eden Gardens. Friday’s fixture also produced the most sixes (42) in a T20 match. It surpassed the 38 hits by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad last month, and by Royal Challengers Bengaluru and SRH in Bengaluru last week. Curran tried to make sense of the carnage.Related

“Yeah, I think loads of different things [have added up to this],” Curran said. “I think the way guys train is obviously huge and they can hit balls for a long period of time. I guess it’s the confidence, coaches and the way we’ve been training. Let’s be honest – small grounds with a bit of dew and the ball [gets wet] and sometimes you get a wide call. You think you’ve got a dot ball, you review it and then it’s wide. Then an extra ball. So, yeah, not saying it’s a batsman’s game but it’s showing… I’m sure everyone wants to keep seeing sixes. I think stats is definitely going out of the window. It’s all about winning those small moments.”Curran was also pleased with how destroyer-in-chief on the night Jonny Bairstow bounced back after a string of low scores, which had resulted in him being dropped from the team.Getty Images

Bairstow has also had a tough winter with England in India. He is the only England player who has been involved in the 50-over World Cup, the five-Test series earlier this year and the IPL, and has struggled to make an impact across the long stint in India. On Friday, though, Bairstow returned in place of Liam Livingstone and got cracking in the massive chase. He stayed unbeaten on 108 off 48 balls with eight fours and nine sixes.”Really pleased for Jonny. He’s obviously been on tour for a really long time,” Curran said. “A couple of games out of the side, he looked like he came back really eager to score runs for the team and showed what an amazing player that he is. So, I’m really pleased for him.”Curran was also impressed with Shashank Singh, who clattered an unbeaten 68 off 28 balls, in an unbroken 84-run stand for the third wicket off 37 balls.3:15

Which is the worst way to get out, according to Jonny Bairstow?

“We gave him that extra bit of responsibility to go in and No. 4 and he’s been the find of the season for us,” Curran said of Shashank. “Him and Ashutosh [Sharma] have been absolutely incredible and I’m just really pleased. Our group has been through a lot in the last couple of weeks and like I said, take two points and you’re going to enjoy those small wins. And it’s not a small win. It’s a really big win to come to Kolkata and beat that team. Proud of the team, proud of the coaches and proud of everyone.”What was Bairstow’s game plan when faced with a chase of 262 on his comeback? “Try to whack it as far as possible,” Bairstow said with a smile. “I’ve never actually been in a game where 260 has been scored. Look, if it’s in your area, you gotta’ go. If you actually have a couple of quiet overs, which we actually did against Sunil [Narine, who finished with figures of 4-0-24-1]… [That was] because we know how important he is in their side and losing fewer wickets against someone like that is imperative to a chase like that.”Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer wanted his players to respond strongly when they face Delhi Capitals next up to end a stretch of five home games on the trot.”To be honest, both the teams played tremendously and I personally feel that this is one of those games where you have to go back to the drawing board and see to it that you introspect on the areas where you went wrong,” Shreyas said. “Especially batting first and getting 260 on the board and then not being able to defend it hurts, but at the same time, it’s a great lesson for all the players, especially the bowlers. We’ve got one more game over here and it’s important we assess the conditions and come up with greater ideas.”
